Devotionals
I used two pillows. It produced the proper angle. If I lay flat the coughing would slowly creep up on me. I had slept quite a bit earlier in the day, so it was hard to get to sleep anyway. I rustled the covers, prayed for sleep, and eventually settled into a state of comfort.
“Daddy…daddy…daddy,” softly drifted a small voice from upstairs. Intermittent coughing and crying followed.
I sat up and took in a quick breath, holding back a cough of my own. Grabbing the medicine and a sippy-cup of water, I headed up to my son’s room. I entered to find him sitting up, whimpering. He had lost his pacifier. After administering the Tylenol and water, he lay down and sucked fitfully on his Nuk. I returned to my own bed and lay back down.
About 1:30am, the soft whimpering commenced once again. Rising reluctantly, I could feel my own throat bemoan my lack of sleep. It was scratchy and sore. My head was emitting dull throb. I trudged up the stairs again and got my son settled. He did not seem to respond to my comforting very well initially, but in the end he went back to his slumbering. I hoped that I would not be back again very soon.
4:51am; he was ready to get up. Yey. That meant it was also time for me to rise cheerfully up and greet the day (sarcasm). This scenario made a good case for the invention of coffee. The hot drink, though I’m not much for the taste, hit the spot. I’ll be ready for nap time later…
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. (Rom 5:3-5)
Do I really rejoice in the fact that I am sick, getting up in the middle of the night, and taking care of my sick child? I do if I look at it the right way. It is an opportunity, like every other life moment; one where I can call on the Holy Spirit to help me through. In times where the seemingly mundane choices become a battle between a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1), and a faithless act of our own, God watches.
Am I grateful for the chance to change, build character, and hope in being made perfect? It only happens through the Spirit.
By the way, that hope talked about here is also related to being like Christ. In the end, I will be like him; without sickness. One more reason to rejoice…
In Christ,
TD
