Holidays
A young lady said to me, “I’m not a prostitute!” and yet, she was sleeping around. We hear, “A thief? I’m not a thief. I didn’t steal it, I just borrowed it for awhile.” “A murderer? Not hardly! They just made me so mad I lost control. I didn’t mean to hit him so hard.” “An Adulterer? No way. It was only a one night stand.” “A drunk? I may drink too much at times but I’m not a drunk or an alcoholic.” “Foul mouthed? I am not! I just express myself. I just say what comes to mind. Everybody says those things when they are upset.”
Sin... when will we all start admitting to ourselves that we are sinners? ...
The scripture says, Rom 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Rom 3:10 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
Excusing oneself is as old as the Garden of Eden. “It was the serpent.” “It was my wife. You gave her to me God.” It went from one temptation, one episode of humanity lifting themselves in pride above the knowledge of God, to suddenly making the whole thing God’s fault. We are like children, throwing our weight around, trying to deceive even God. It just doesn’t work!
Jesus paid a horrible price for your sin and mine. I’ve often pondered the question, “Why did Jesus have to pay such a horrific price?” I asked that until I realized... to some degree... the dastardly (nasty, mean, treacherous, cowardly) effect of sin upon a life... upon my life.
Sin doesn’t just affect the sinner. If effects everyone around them. Rom 14:7 “For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” Loved ones grieve and desperately try to cause the sinner to change his/her ways. Neighbors and friends become angry. Society accuses. The law has little sympathy. But rather than admit wrong, the sinner excuses his sin as though that somehow justifies it.
There is no redemption for any of us until we are willing to recognize sin for what it is... calling it by its proper name, and take personal responsibility for that sin. That is humbling! But oh, so necessary. How can we ask pardon from one who suffered so much for that sin unless we “own” our sin and confess our own responsibility for that sin?
Jesus paid the price for each and every sin... Our willfulness, our pride, our selfishness. We only need to ask for and accept His pardon. What love!
During this Easter season, let us examine ourselves, take on the humility demanded of us, confess our sin and receive His pardon. Let us profess our love for such a precious sacrifice which paid the price for our sin so that we would not have to bear its shame any longer. Let us LIVE in newness of life and show forth our love by giving ourselves in obedience to His will rather than that of our own.
1Pe 2:9-16 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.”
