Women
Recently, I purchased a "Princess Bible" for my six-year old. She wanted a bible, badly. So since she is in first grade and she has made marked improvement in her reading ability, I decided “no more picture bible.” The cover is pink and it is glittery all over and has a rhinestone buckle that snaps closed. It’s so beautiful and even pondered that I might buy one for myself.
The next morning the girls excitedly asked me to read from it. It was most interesting because I let my oldest daughter pick the story she wanted me to read. And since this ain’t no picture bible I fearfully said ok. I imagined she would accidentally pick something from Leviticus or Chronicles where the father of him is the father of him and the father of him is the father of him. How would I get a lesson out of that? Interestingly, she picked the story of the shepherds. I thought “Oh great, there’s a ton in here we could talk about.” After we read it I emphasized how the shepherds dropped what they were doing to run and see the beautiful baby Savior. They hurried off to rest.
Next my four-year old said she wanted to pick a story. I thought “Oh no, here it comes.” She surprised me because she picked the very first page of the bible. So we read the story of creation and of course talked about God creating the world and how beautiful it is. They really loved it. So as we went about our day, I paused…and although I had been too busy to see it at the time but it seems the Lord was trying to show me something as well. My daughters both picked two very important stories. Both were about new beginnings. It was in plain sight. Shepherds were the lowest on the totem pole at that time. No one cared about them but yet, God sent angels to appear to shepherds to announce the birth of his Son. How many times do us moms, especially stay-at-home or single moms feel lowest on the totem pole. I don’t know about you but I am still waiting for my children to “rise up and call me blessed.” The only thing that comes out of their mouth is “Moooommmeee, I want milk or I want juice.” So I wait and wait. But then I think what am I waiting for I need to run just like those shepherds. I need to hurry off to find rest. Rest in worshiping the Savior; rest in doing what He wants me to do. Rest in his care; rest in the fact that he loves me, a mom.
Second, the story of creation is God bringing order to a place where there is no order. Specifically, “Now the earth was formless and empty…” That is what the bible says in Genesis 1:2 Isn’t that what the Lord does in our lives. We are formless and empty at conception. By the time we come out of the womb of our mother there is a familiar shape. We have bones. We have structure. We have everything the same as full grown adult except miniature. However, we are formless and empty in many other ways. We still need to be nutured spiritually. We still need to be shaped emotionally. We need to be fed nutritionally. We just plain need nurturing as infants, as toddlers, as young children, as preteens and as teenagers. That is the beginning of most human lives; and as we come before Him on our knees, whether it is the beginning of the day or the end of the day, or when our babies are taking their naps, that HE would order our steps like it says in the bible. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way.” Psalm 37:23 KJV. That God would have His way with our lives. That we would believe in God’s plan for our lives and follow after it. Then in doing so, inspire new beginnings in other women, in other families, in our friends in our neighbors and in our communities. And above all else, glorify the Lord.
