Encouragement
I walked into the bedroom and changed into my pajamas, threw my worn clothes into the hamper, pulled back the blankets on my bed, turned off the light, and laid down, pulling the blankets up to my chin. It was a cold night. The wind roared outside, beating against the windows. Even with the drapes pulled shut, I could imagine the snow blowing, swirling in a wild dance with the wind.
As I lay in bed, my prayers were for my family and restful sleep. I closed my eyes and steadied my breathing. I drifted into nothing-ness, free from all of life's demands and thoughts.
Light. Colors. Red, pink, purple, blue, green, orange. Flashing, light and dark. And then I was in the center of the roiling colors, standing while the colors raged around me. In the midst of the colors, I felt wild. Chaotic energy flowed through my veins. I wanted to move, but I couldn't. The colors were moving for me. I wanted to join the colors, to take part in their wild dance, but I couldn't make myself move. My arms and legs were frozen, held bound by some invisible force. I felt frustrated. I wanted to scream, "Let me go! I need to move!" But I was restricted.
What was holding me back? "Lord," I cried out, "help me!"
I heard a whisper, "You can do it."
"I can't do it. I'm held tight. Help me!"
"Just try. Move your finger."
I closed my eyes and concentrated all my thoughts on moving my right index finger. It moved! I could move my index finger!
"Now try your whole hand."
I focused and moved my hand. "I can move my hand! I'm breaking free!" Little by little, very, very slowly, I began to move my other hand, my arms, my feet, my legs, my head. Soon I was dancing and leaping along with the lights and colors. I felt energized, vibrant, free.
And then the colors stopped. The lights dimmed. I stood still.
"You know, you can do this when you're awake, too. You just need to let go of all your concerns, put aside your worries, concentrate on moving forward. You have so many talents, gifts that I have instilled in you. I want so much for you to use those talents, to feel alive every moment of your life, to be joyously happy. You can do this. It is my gift to you. Using your talents, living your dreams, will be your gift to me."
I awoke with a start. My room was still dark, but I felt illuminated. I was filled with such energy as I have never felt before. Because of my night dream, I was confident that I could begin to live my day dreams. With God's help, using the gifts with which God has blessed me, I can realize what God dreams for me.
