The Miracle of Christmas
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Something happens to people at Christmas time. Something miraculous. There is just something about Christmas that brightens the hearts in all of us - in kids from 1 to 92 as the old song says. Could it be little baby Jesus being born again inside us? Think about it - We want to make sure every child has a gift under the tree. We buy gifts for children on Angel Trees that we don't even know, we help feed the poor, we send shoes to children in Africa, or we simply reflect on miracles of past Christmas' and praise God for all our blessings. It's a fact; people’s hearts are softened more this time of year than any other. Why is that? I believe its Jesus…He is the true miracle of Christmas.
There are so many stories told of Christmas miracles. Of people reaching out to those less fortunate and giving – not only of their resources but their love and compassion. And miracles do happen this time of year; A child who is bed-ridden with a terrible illness is revived and made whole again. A lonely widow is surrounded with love and help from friends and neighbors. A family who is homeless is given a place to live with food and clothing. A woman who just learned she has cancer is given peace in her heart from the very Prince of Peace. Families are reunited and hearts are mended. All these gifts of love ultimately come from The Giver of Gifts; God Himself. Just as He gave His precious Son some 2000 years ago, he is still giving today…the miracle of the spirit of Christmas. Think of the peace you have felt at Christmas time...the joy that could only come from God. I think He gives us this spirit to help us never to forget the love and sacrifice that He made for us. Out of His deep love for us – He GAVE His Son that we might have eternal life. What a gift!
Luke 2:9-14 "And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
Good tidings of great joy! The very gift of the Christ child brought peace and goodwill toward men. It's still that way today. When we give, we are showing that same love that God brought into the world with the birth of His Son. We are His lights shining in a world of darkness. The Christ likeness of giving is inside all of us…it is God’s gift of love through Jesus Christ. But to pull it out from a selfish and sinful human spirit, one must have received the Ultimate gift of the Saviour, Jesus Christ. He is the utmost expression of Love. One cannot truly express sacrificial love unless they have experienced the love of Jesus.
In our Christmas giving and selfless acts, I believe God is smiling down on us. I believe He is proud to call us His sons and daughters when we reflect the likeness of His Son. But why don’t we do this all year? Why can’t we capture the spirit of Christmas and draw upon that miraculous giving all the time?
I challenge you to capture that love, that selfless giving that makes your spirit light and your heart sing and keep it into next year. I am taking my own challenge. I love this time of year and I want to keep this joy going!
Just think how blessed we would be to keep the Christmas spirit alive all the time! The Bible promises it is more blessed to give than to receive. And, there is nothing better to take your mind off your own troubles, than to help someone else. Take one day at a time and ask God to help you to be a giver of good gifts all year long. And remember, the very best gift you can give to someone is to share the love of Jesus. So, just do it! Then watch all the miracles as God’s love spreads. Have yourself a Merry CHRISTmas and a joyful, giving New Year!
