Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday December 15,2009

Most of the literature that I can find on successful living proposes that the successful life is much like a straight line on a heart machine. In real life a straight lined heart monitor creates quite a stir, but the simple ebb flow, up and down indicator on the monitor reveals a more normal pattern.

The heart monitor is a better indicator of actual life than are the ridiculous ideas many experts have about living. Due to a failure to grasp the reality all of life follows a pattern on ups and downs too many folks think they need a psychiatrist when in fact the psychiatrist may need one.

When life goes "boom" it usually is not the end the world or even of your world. It's merely an event that signals a change. Change can be good or bad, and in most cases the change is good or bad depending on your understanding of who is really in charge of your life. If the events in our life are "acts of God" then it follows God must have a purpose and we simply must spend a little time figuring out the why, keep a Romans 8:28 attitude and thus learn the lessons, and as a result grow. Along this line one of my favorite authors, Louis L'Amour, wrote:

"There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning."

Reaching the brick walls in periods of life is a grand thing when properly understood. The "brick wall" can mean a number of things such as; God has shut this door. Or this event calls for a re-evaluation of procedures. It can mean a need to change course to go around the brick wall. It may even mean that you simply need to build the wall higher, making a two story one. Who knows, but brick walls are usually NOT designed as something to beat your head against. Find out how to use the brick wall, go over or around it.

In my limited life I have found on a few occasions that when it looked like I was about to hit the brick wall, as I got closer, I found the path took a sharp turn and all of my worrying was for nothing as it only appeared that I was going to hit the brick wall. On the occasions when I have "hit the wall," I survived a little wiser, in a little or much pain, and made a note that when I see what appears to be a brick wall in the path, I will slow down and learn how to properly size up the apparent obstacle in my path.

The life worth living will learn the beauty of John's word in Revelation 21:5 "And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful."
