"Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him." (Proverb 29:20)
There is a small industry cranking out cute signs that embody the essence of this proverb. "Engage brain before opening mouth" is but one. The fact is nobody likes a loudmouth, and someone who is always the first to speak can easily pick up such a label. A thoughtful response is desired, but if you speak before you think there will not be a thoughtful response. Life and this proverb will teach us that such a person will continually get in trouble--trouble caused by their mouth. That is why it says there is little hope for such a person. Not having hope is a terrible thing. The lesson: control your tongue, think before you speak, and value wisdom. Doing so will cause you to be thought of as a wise person rather than a loudmouth.
