She did as she was asked. She gave up life as she knew it for an unknown path, following her husband, who followed his God. Then came her blessing. A promise of children who would bring her joy, making her a mother of nations.
As the years passed, she continued to believe, hope, and trust. Then old age closed that door, or so she thought. Surely she was convinced the promise had expired.
The laugh of her hollow heart may have surprised even Sarah, but trust had given in to bitterness; hope was replaced by despair; and belief in the promise faded into practicality. Common sense labeled the situation impossible. Now, the absurdity of the idea made her laugh to herself.
Then, out of the shadows of her loneliness, echoed the ultimate pity-party-crashing question, spoken by the Lord himself, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”
Sarah reacted by lying. Perhaps she wanted time to rethink her action. After all, she remembered Who had made the promise, Who had never closed the door at all. Her thoughts must have turned quickly from her circumstance to God’s power.
That same question crumbles the foundations of our own pity-parties today. How will we respond? Will we remember how foolish Sarah may have felt for allowing doubt and frustration to steal her joy? Will we believe that God’s promises have no expiration dates?
Genesis 18:11-15
