Short Stories
At that time,
Michael shall stand up,
The great prince
who stands watch
over the sons
of your people...
[Daniel 12:1]
************************
A goldfish plops out of the
River, which runs by the Throne
in the Throne Room. (Pause.)
It plops back in, again,
and gets chased around,
by its twin brother.
A Real Big Angel is standing by
the Front Door. He's Real
Big. The Big Angel,
however, is not the one who's
got the Father's Attention,
at this particular hour.
It's the disheveled, plump one,
standing a bit awkwardly,
at the edge of the Front Door
to the Throne Room.
He's got thick glasses
on, and has somewhat of a
limp. Even with the glasses on,
he's got a bit of a squint. The
squint, right now, is of an
irritable, uneasy sort.

(Glasses slide down nose.)
(Squint.)
(Woeful voice,
with a bit of a squeak to it.)
"Are You
BUSY,
LORD?"
[LOVING SMILE.]
"No,
My Jo'ach."
[NOD.]
"Come in."
(Woeful grimmace.)
"I could KNEEL,
but....."
(Touch bad leg.)
[SMILE!]
[WAVE HAND OVER.]
"Come, Jo'ach.
Sit by Me."
(Limps over.)
(Sits down on little
stone bench, that
faces the Flowing River
by the Throne.)
(Look down at the two
goldfish.)
"LORD?"
"Yes,
My Jo'ach?"
"LORD?
Can I get a TRANSFER?"
[LOVING GAZE
AT ONE OF THE MATTED WINGS.]
"Tell Me,
My Jo'ach."
[TENDER VOICE.]
"Why do you wish
a transfer?"
(Look down.)
(Push glasses up.)
(Pick at white gauzy
gown. The front has an
indiscriminate spot, on it.)
"I don't LIKE this ASSIGNMENT."
[LOVING SMILE!]
"What is it,
My Jo'ach?"
"Well......."
(Frown!)
(Twist about,
grimmacing,
to scratch behind
a matted wing.)
(Turn, just for a moment,
to woefully stare at the
Big Angel standing by the
Front Door. Big Angel's
wings are.....well...BIG:
not a ruffled Feather,
or mat, in sight.)
(Woeful sigh.)
(Turn back around.)
(Look at the two goldfish*,
again.)
"Well......"
(Tug at long gown, again.)
[PATIENT SMILE.]
"Tell Me,
about it,
My Jo'ach.
What is it,
about My Assignment,
that you don't like."
(Squirm.)
(Sudden cry.)
"CAN'T I go back....
to work in the BARN,
AGAIN?"
(Woeful face.)
"I really LIKED IT,
THERE!"
[EMPATHETIC NOD.]
[NOD.]
(Woeful whine.)
"I LIKED IT!
I was HAPPY,
THERE!"
[TENDER,
REPROACHFUL VOICE.]
"Not JOYFUL,
My Jo'ach?"
(Look back down,
again, at the two goldfish.
One, now, is pecking at
a small plant down at the
bottom of a little algae-
covered rock.)
(Woeful squint.)
"Well......"
(Shrug.)
(Whiny voice.)
"Ya know;
I'm....ALWAYS JOYFUL,
LORD!"
(Glance up, look of
clueless anxiousness.)
"There's.....NO question,
'a THAT!"
[REASSURING NOD.]
"I'm always.... JOYFUL!"
[SMILE!]
(Big Angel, over by the
Front Door, shifts his
Big, Bare foot**, just a bit.)
"You can ask ANYBODY,
around HERE!"
(Turns around, again,
to the Big Angel by the
Front Door.)
(Thumbs at Big Angel.)
"JUST ask ANYBODY!
WHO'S the most JOYFUL,
around HERE?"
[SOFT CHUCKLE.]
[2ND REASSURING NOD.]
[GAZE, FOR A MOMENT,
AT THE STOCK MARKET,
ON WALL STREET,
IN AMERICA,
BACK DOWN ON EARTH.)
(Whinier voice.)
"Are You
LISTENING,
LORD?
I'm the MOST JOYFUL!"
[CALM NOD.]
[WATCH SOME FISH,
FOR A MOMENT,
SWIMMING IN A COLD
RIVER, NEAR WASILLA,
ALASKA.]
[PATIENT VOICE.]
"You will be back
at the barn, soon,
My Jo'ach."
(Loud sigh!)
"Oh, THANK YOU, LORD!
THANK YOU!"
(Stand up, immediately.)
(Stumble, just a bit,
from the limp foot.)
"Can I go THERE,
RIGHT NOW?
RIGHT NOW?"
[CALM VOICE.]
"No."
(Loud whimper.)
(Sink back down,
somewhat clumsily,
onto the stone bench.)
(Knot bits of gauzy gown,
with both plump hands.)
"Aw!"
(Stamp good foot, just
a little.)
"Aw!
Come ON!"
(Whine.)
"Why.... NOT?"
[PATIENT SIGH.]
"Because,
My Jo'ach.
Your joy,
is in serving."
[TENDER VOICE.]
"I AM the LORD."
(Interrupting whine.)
"Yeah,
but......L....O.....R.....D!"
(Louder whine.)
(Rub plump bare toes, together,
irritably.)
She's always COMPLAINING!
And.....GRUMPY!
And....SHE'S always
askin' for Archangel MICHAEL!
MICHAEL!
MICHAEL!"
(Woeful grimmace!)
She says....because,
he's BIG and STRONG!
And, STRONG!"
(Woeful snort.)
"And....she's always
GRUMPIN' at me!"
[SMILE!]
"No,
My Jo'ach.
She's always grumping...
at Me."

When
the morning stars
sang together,
and all
the sons of God
shouted
for joy?
