GUARD 1: Who goes? Who goes? Thou answer true and fast
Thro dark encloake’d night indeed a shadow ‘pon thee cast.
Thou shall not take one measure’d step no not a single inch
‘Tis thou hast proven true thou art not demon, ghost nor Grinch.

GUARD 2: Foreswear thou boldish brackish threat’s an’ seest ‘pon belief,
Thou regular tho re’luctant nocturnal watch relief
Thro blackened curtain veil of night my countenance be shroud
To thee I harken ‘pon this hour my duty call’d aloud.

GUARD 1: True and true, thou dost send my heart a-hurried flurried hammer
This curse’d night doth rend my bones a cold and clammy clamor
Thou knowest not just mortals ‘pon these battlements have walk’d
I need fear thee no not now anon in now I knowest thou hast talk’d

GUARD 2: Pray that thou dost hold this hour both steady and with truth
Thy stalwart watch I do dismiss and undertake myself forsooth,
Tho gathered here in mortal steel we do our charge pursue
With happy eyes we would enspy the coming dawn its hue

GUARD 1: Pray nay, I do betray this day it does delay
What can I say would then belay this hour in tardy sway?

GUARD 2: Of that I pray, shall I convey, with much dismay
That we today, shall dearly pay, and thus be cast away

GUARD 1: Of foulest play, I do convey, and thus shall I astray
GUARD 2: Hie thee away, and here I stay, until the light of day
GUARD 1: Yea--
GUARD 2: Ay—
