Healthy Living
Can thinking be bad for our health? Yes, if we are referring to negative thinking. Otherwise, there wouldn't be such a term called 'psychosomatic illness'. Incidentally, 'psycho' is a term that denotes the mind while 'somatic' is a term that denotes the body.
Some people are more predisposed to negative thinking than others. I used to be one such person. Because of my tendency to thnk negatively in the past, it eventually led to a severe case of hyperthyroidism. I even got eczema - a skin condition - as a result. Thank God! I no longer have hyperthyroidism. My eczema has also improved, I believe, as a result of my conscious effort to change my thinking.
Can you now see the correlation between negative thinking and ill health? Having said this, I must add that negative thinking may or may not necessarily lead to ill health immediately. However, it is my personal conviction that negative thinking over a prolonged period of time will certainly lead to ill health. Sometimes, it could even be fatal. That is why it is so important for us to guard our thinking zealously if we want to enjoy good health in the long run, especially for those of us who are more predisposed to negative thinking.
Whenever we catch ourselves thinking negative thoughts, what we can do is to divert our attention to something positive or to some task at hand. However, if we can't think of anything positive immediately or if there is no task at hand, it is ok. There is no need to get harsh with ourselves. What we can do, instead, is to say the word 'stop' to ourselves. It doesn't matter if we say it aloud or simply in our hearts though. What is more important to us is to stop the negative thoughts immediately. The reason why I am suggesting this to you is because I have tried it myself, and it works! Having said this, I must warn you that the negative thoughts may stop just temporarily. It may be quite a while later before you notice that you no longer have those recurring negative thoughts.
In conclusion, negative thinking is certainly bad for our health in the long run. Therefore, it will do us much good to start watching what goes through our minds daily and to learn to practise control over our thoughts. Moreover, by doing so, it may also save ourselves some possibly high medical bills. So, why not start by thinking right at this moment?

I totally agree with your article. Thanks for the information.
I suspect that any "thinking" that diminishes what and who our Lord is is not truth. We are to focus on His truth and His abilities and His promises. HE is the answer. Christian Science and many of the mind over matter "religions" advocate "positive thinking" but are missing our Lord and all that comes with Him - SO I think it matters that what we think is true and Biblical and focusing on Him - He is able and well, sometimes we are "but dust". Thanks for writing this thought provoking article.
