‘Silence of the Night’-Sheket H’lilah.
Binyamin sat in the corner of his house. He was quietly fuming. He had carefully planned the outing. Now, his plans were upset. He considered himself a good man. A dutiful father, the husband of one wife and father to three. He worked hard to provide food for his family and he did so without complaint. He was well known in society. People within the community paid him the greatest respect. He was an accountant. Even the Egyptians treated him with some deference. They did not like the Jews, but put up with him because they needed his services. His great grandfather had started the family business, faithfully serving Pharaoh during those years, when the great famine had rocked the economy of Egypt. That was long ago. His grandfather and father had built upon the initial success. Now he- the first born was directing the firm.
The family lived well. Their house was situated in the middle of a 10 acre plot located in one of the most expensive districts of Goshen. Land has become increasingly expensive over the years and his great grandfather’s foresight had paid off. The estate was now worth millions.
As he sat brooding over his life, he observed his wife and children talking in hushed tones. They were recounting the tragedies that had befallen Egypt. Nine so far and this night was supposed to bring the final judgment. He noticed their apprehension. Their shadows danced in the light flickering from homemade candles. This was to be a night like no other.
Binyamin stared at his family. He sighed. He would just have to wait. His wife would never agree to his leaving the house now. His thoughts suddenly turned on his dark secret. What would she do if she found out that he had been engaged in an illicit affair with his Egyptian secretary? He shuddered.
This was complex. It wasn’t that he no longer loved his wife. He still needed her, but things were now different. She had her own life and he, his. Their busy schedules had left little time for romance. He just could not spend the time with her that romance demanded. A distance had grown between them over the years. Then one day, one lonely day, Nada-his secretary entered his life. He had not planned to have an extra marital affair. Nada was with him day and sometimes well into the night. She filled out his schedules, ensured that the little things, important things, were done correctly. She was available and yes, beautiful.
One night they crossed the forbidden line and since then he had become entangled in a relationship that, if exposed in public, would forever destroy his family. He shivered again. He dreaded to think how his wife would react. And his children? He really loved them. He would do anything to keep them from getting hurt. No! he concluded, nothing would be allowed to destroy his family. Not even his indiscretions.
His dread of discovery however, was not enough to stop him from pursuing with heightening anxiety the fascinating attentions of his Nada. There was something that held him bound to her. He could not place his finger on it. He knew she was a worshipper of the ‘Fertility god,’ and she certainly made him feel young again. She was so…so different. He sighed a second time. He had planned to meet her that evening explaining to his wife, as he often did, that he had to attend to ‘delicate’ and ‘sensitive’ matters of the state. This night however, his wife would have none of it.
“You can’t go Binyamin. Everyone has to stay at home. Besides, what will I do if something dreadful happens to Joshua?” she argued.
“Don’t be ridiculous!” he retorted. “Nothing is going to happen! You surely do not believe all this rubbish about sheep’s blood do you?”
“Binyamin you may not believe, but after all the destruction that has happened across the land, I will not allow you to leave us alone this night. You can go any night, but not this night!” she insisted.
Binyamin grudgingly gave in. He sat in the corner rueing the day that the Prophet called Moshe, had shown up. His plans for a riotous night out with Nada, had been ruined by the Prophet’s madness, and he did not like it in the least. There would be a day of reckoning, he vowed. He began to forget his woes as the silence of the night and drowsiness gradually overwhelmed him.
Binyamin woke with a start. The sun was just beginning to rise in the distance. Strange sounds could be heard. He jumped up, and rushed outside. He had fallen asleep in his clothes. The eerie sounds of wailing human voices, assailed his ears. It had happened again. Death had stuck the nation. A sudden fear gripped his heart. He rushed back into the house seeking his first born, Joshua. Binyamin held onto him for dear life.
Tears filled his eyes, and ran down his face, as he cradled his only son. They flowed faster. Gratitude filled with heart. Grace upon grace, he was still alive. How could it be; such an unfaithful husband as he, could be saved by the blood? His body shook with the force of his silent weeping as he contemplated the truth, and his wife gently placed her loving arms around him....
“But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners Christ (H’ Mashiach), died for us.” (Romans 5:10 Nkjv)
