You used a kiss to betray me
That most intimate of greetings delivered me
I knew that it was coming
But its occurrence still stunned me.
How much kinder if you had shouted
“There, that’s him!”
Or given them my description
As if they didn’t know.
The words of my ancestors rang in my ears.
“Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread
Has lifted up his heel against me.”
I shuddered at your touch,
Not recoiling from my future, but from yours.
As they dragged me away,
My prayer was for your repentance.
“For it is not an enemy who reproaches me,
That I could bear it.
But it was you, a man my equal, my
Companion and acquaintance.
We took sweet counsel together,
And walked to the house of God in the throng.”
My heart is breaking, but I am ready
For my heart has broken before.
Others have left me, but they can’t forget me.
I have been shunned, despised, rejected.
And now I am ready to finish this work.
The future of my life, and that of the world
Sealed with a kiss.
