Promises make me think of covenants, of love. That fist sweet promise in the words," I love you." The true and meaningful promises that were kept and helped us hold on. We have all been on the side of the broken promise; whether we broke it ourselves, or were betrayed by another. But, can you recall the taste of a promise kept? That glorious glow on the face of a child when you actually go to the game? Or when you said you’d do something, that feeling when it is done? Can you remember how it felt when someone said they would be your friend forever, and they meant it?
I can.
About nine years ago, I met a wonderful man. Sometimes it was hard to understand him, but he always showed me that he loved me. He told me he would always be there, and that he would never leave me. Those were brave words, yet I decided to believe him. Since then, our road together has been hard. There were so many times it seemed like he didn’t care, or wasn’t even listening. He would tell me when I did things wrong, gently, but it still stung, and I would wonder how someone who loved me so much, could hurt me so deeply. Maybe you have someone like that in your life. Maybe you count them a blessing or a curse, a trial or who you would most like to be like. They challenge you as they remain constant; steady when you falter, careful when you get proud.
I guarantee you have someone like this in your life. His name is Jesus Christ! Surprised? Curious? The greatest promises ever given, were given to you. They cannot be broken or twisted, or made of no affect. Do they sting? Sometimes. But they are ever constant, healing the heartache of broken promises; those trifles that serve only to smooth the moment, not to ever be kept. These true promises were made by the world’s most faithful lover, the only one to always do what he said. Sometimes God hurts, but please remember his promises; to never leave you or forsake you, to send his comforter, and to come back for you soon.
These are the greatest promises ever written, the boldest declarations of love. He loves you so much, even to the ends of the universe. He died and lives and every piece still cries out, “ I love you!”. Be careful what you promise, but even more, be careful to remember what Christ promised you.
