At the age of fifteen while at a band training camp, I received some devastating news. My dad called to inform me that my mother had been bitten by a Black Widow spider and the doctors were not expecting her to live. The venom had attacked her respiratory system and heart as a result of an allergic reaction to the bite. For three days she was unaware that she was even alive. After receiving the phone call, I returned to my dorm room, locked the door and prayed. I remember begging God to restore my mother’s health and let her live. I pulled out my Bible and began to read. An awesome peace came over me and I stopped crying and was calm. God moved that mountain in my life by healing my mother.
Later, I saw God move again in the area of health. My nephew, Eric, was two years old when the doctors found a grapefruit-size tumor on the base of his brain. It was a routine doctor visit, but one MRI later, the baby was rushed to a nearby city and the tumor was removed that very day. When Eric would suffer from pain and the effects of the surgery, my brother would sing, “Jesus Loves Me” to him and he would calm. The pain seemed to ease. That was all the faith my brother could find during the time to just trust. God was more than enough.
The mountains in my life are often measured by the depths of the valleys. God is faithful. He sees our hearts and knows our needs. He is tender and compassionate. If we can “muster” a tiny bit of faith and believe, He will do the rest. No matter what size the mountain we are facing. He will either move us over it, around it, through it, or He can just move that thing out of our way. It is always in His timing and in His way. He is never late, and whatever the answer to our pleas, He is working His good in us and developing a deeper walk and faith.
“If I go to heights of the dawn, if I sail to the far side of the sea; even there Your hand will be guiding me, holding me, steadfastly.” These are familiar words from Psalm 139 that my best friend and I used in a song in college nearly fifteen years ago. God has moved us around, through and over many obstacles since then, but one thing is always the same. He is steadfast and faithful.
