John asked, “What kind of work needs to be done?” Ron said, “I would prefer that you come out and take a look at the job.” John came back, “How about 9:00 or 9:30 in the morning?” They both agreed on it and shook hands.
As Ron walked away, Barb looked at John and said, “Don’t do it!” She knew what was starting to go on in her sweet husband’s head. John knew she had wanted a horse ever since she was 5 years old. It had been a dream of hers back when her granddad was dying. He had promised to buy her a horse if he continued to live.
Barb had felt for a long time that her life’s dream had faded away, she was already in her mid- thirties and saw no hope of ever owning a horse. She could sense John was beginning to see a chance to make her dream come true and that he wanted to be the one to fulfill it.
The following morning, John and Barb arrived at the rent house. Their eyes widened in shock at the condition of the house. Ron, walking up to John, said, “Well, what do you think?” John laughed, “This house needs to be plowed over and a new one built. I usually like to think there’s hope in everything (pause), but to tell you the truth, I’ve never seen a site like this.” Taking a deep breath, John went on to say, “Let’s take a look on the inside and check the damage.”
Following John and Barb inside, Ron said with concern, “I can’t do what you are recommending; I have to get this house cleaned up and make it livable.” John responded, “When was that last time anyone cleaned this house and threw away any trash? It’s knee deep in filth.” Barb, grabbing her nose, added, “Goodness, it stinks in here! It is unbelievable that anyone could live here. There are no words to describe this house.” John also added, “I have seen some houses really in need, but this one, is a whole other story! Let me take a look at that horse.” Ron responded, “How about this afternoon?”
As Barb and John drove away, Barb saw a look of determination in John’s eye. She had seen that look before and she knew he had made up his mind to take on the job. Barb pleaded, “Please, don’t do it. You are only going to do it because of me. Please, don’t take on the job, it’s not worth it to make my dream come true. The house is impossible. It is so filthy and there’s so much work that needs to be done...please, John, don’t do it!”
Lovingly, John said, “You’ve always dreamed of owning a horse, this is my chance to make your dream finally come true. Plus, it will give me a challenge. The inside needs as much work as the outside. That poor house is crying out for some much needed TLC.”
When they arrived at the ranch, Barb instantly fell in love with the horse. With a lot of ooo’s and aaahh’s and while she was patting this beautiful creature, tears were forming in Barb’s eyes and inside she was uplifting prayers of thanksgiving. She knew with every ounce of her being, that this was more than just a pet, this was a dream that she thought would never be fulfilled. In the middle of being caught up in such happy feelings, she couldn’t help but feel that what John was facing would take nothing short of a miracle.
Eleven years later, Barb’s favorite pet is still the horse that her wonderful husband worked so hard to get for her. He really showed her that it is never too late for dreams to come true.
