Most of us equate the word “power” with force and dominance. We conjure up pictures of natural power – the awesomeness of the raw energy of Niagara Falls or the might displayed by the winds of a hurricane. We are also witnesses of such destructive use of power by men as evidenced in warfare throughout history and most recently by suicide terrorists worldwide. It would seem that man is at the mercy of the forces of nature or evil. Yet there are other examples of power used for creative purposes: the same energy found in water and wind are harnessed for making electricity or giving power through jet propulsion. And there are men who have single-handedly lifted wrecked cars by brute strength to free someone who was pinned underneath as well as other heroes who daily risk their lives to save others.
Beyond natural power and physical power, however, is a greater strength found in the Author of power, God himself. The Creator, who spoke the world into being, the One who made all things out of nothing, the Father who through His sovereign will displayed His love for us by sending His Son to die for our sins, who sustains all things by His powerful word, has also placed His power within all who receive His Son and believe on His name. That is Power, the only Power that will outlast all others no matter how awesome or wonderful or awful they may be. As Jude says in verse 25 - “to the only God, our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore”!
