I do not golf.

I have nothing against it. It is just not my thing. Besides I have neither the time nor surplus finances, though if ever I decided to pursue the sport I am certain I would miraculously find both.

Is it not crazy the way we humans can … Sorry. I find my mind wandering more often lately. Nonetheless people do have an uncanny ability for self-justification.

Let’s see where were we? Ah yes, hope.

I know several who do golf, though, and some with a passion.

This is a nice spring mid-morning and the temperature has not yet reached the seventies, so as I drove by one of our town’s three courses it was no surprise to find it heavily populated.

My last service call went more quickly than expected so I slid into a nursing home parking lot across the street to watch for a few minutes.

As little as I know about the game I believe I am safe in assuming that everyone out there has at one time or another hoped for a hole-in-one. Even the more experienced who know what the odds are of that happening are yet today hoping for at least a par game.

Whoa! Judging by his reaction I do not believe the guy in the gray straw porkpie intended to place the ball precisely into the center of that small pond. He might do better at javelin throwing. I wonder if he is hoping for a hefty bullfrog sporting a knot on his slimy forehead to hop out and graciously return the small dimpled sphere to it's owner?

Since we are on the subject of hope, do you ever wonder or find it odd what some people hope for?

I find myself too frequently hoping for chocolate cake. I love chocolate cake. Day after day I hope that my wife has a big warm chocolate cake waiting for me fresh from the oven when I arrive home after work.

She still hopes that I will eventually pick up after myself. I know this for a fact because she tells me so, and often.

What is hope, anyway?

Some say it is ‘the longing for an optimistic yet uncertain future outcome.’ Could one even have hope if that person already knew every conclusion?

Webster defines hope this way- ‘to cherish a desire with anticipation.’

I believe hope is founded on faith in the one who has promised His children all things good.

''May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace in your faith, that by the power of the Holy Spirit, your whole life and outlook may be radiant with hope'' Romans 15:13

I am curious what others hope for.

Those who are dying most likely hope for a miracle cure.

Birds assuredly hope for a tailwind.

Somewhere this minute a dad hopes for a better job, or any job, and a child hopes for a decent meal, or any meal.

Hope, faith and love are just a few principles that seem to have been overly complicated by man’s intelligence.

What does God hope for? I wonder.

What if the hope of Heaven is as simple as something like… chocolate cake?

You know, after observing these guys I just might consider trying golf.

But I hope not.
