Tabitha had been on routine patrol with Dirk when they encountered two villains, Hot Stuff and Lady Freeze. “Tabitha’s voice came through the static over their comm system, “They double teamed us, I was able to size change enough so their attacks only stunned me, but before I went down, I saw your husband double shotted by them. When I regained my senses, Megawatt was gone.”
Coldfire pushed down her un-Christian inclination of pettiness toward her friend. How was she going to be able to tell her husband that they were going to be parents. Jenny then felt Amazing Woman’s telepathic voice in her mind. ‘I know you are pregnant, so don’t even think about going on a rescue mission to save Dirk! I am sure he’d rather sacrifice himself than endanger your baby.’
Coldfire thought back at her friend, ‘You know my powers can defeat them in a stand up battle. If there’s any danger to the baby, I’ll withdraw. You should know me better than that.’
Tabitha’s response came back tinged with reluctance. ‘I know how rough it was for Rebecca when she was expecting, having to hold back from the more strenuous battles.’ With a mental sigh she continued, ‘If you insist on dealing with them, you need serious backup. I’ll contact Diamond and ask him and Mariness to back you up.’ Sensing Coldfire’s hesitation, she followed up her thought. ‘If you don’t accept reason, I’ll tell the entire team. Do you want to argue with all five of us?’
Blocking out Tabitha from her mind, Jenny admitted privately that she didn’t, not to mention what Ruth Sexton, the temporal exile who provided her powers would say. Reopening telepathic communication to Amazing Woman, she answered, ‘If you insist, but no telling them I’m pregnant. That’s my news to share.’
Tabitha didn’t ‘verbally’ agree, but Jenny felt something akin to satisfaction tinge her acknowledgement. ‘Ok, I’m going to call them now on the comms. Good luck finding Dirk.’
An hour later, the three crimefighters met on a rooftop across from an abandoned factory that was still drawing a large amount of power for some reason. Diamond gave voice to his frustration in his gravelly voice. “Of all’a the powers we got, no one got x-ray vision to scope out this place.”
Coldfire ignored his grumbling and responded, “My thermal vision can see two less than human heat readings, and one reading of way more than normal body heat.”
Mariness asked Coldfire, “Have you tried reaching Megawatt telepathically?’
Jenny flushed, having not thought of that. She was spared by Rex’s blunt proclamation, “Let’s just smash our way in.”
Coldfire turned her cold powers on the wall, making it as brittle as dried bone. She then waved at the wall, saying, “After you.”
The trio of heroes entered the factory and saw Lady Freeze and Hot Stuff arguing about how to dispose of Dirk. Coldfire swept in past her teammates with a targeted coldblast. As she did so, she felt an unexpected pain in her abdomen. Mariness noticed, and commanded her husband, “Save Megawatt. I’ll see to Coldfire!”
Diamond didn’t question his wife, instead punching at Megawatt’s trapped form, which was immobilized except for his head. Coldfire’s pain filled voice reached him after the first blow. “Careful! In that extreme cold, his body might be as fragile as the wall.”
Responding to Coldfire’s suggestion, Diamond reduced his pounding to gentle taps with his diamond hard fingers. As the trapped hero was freed, he generated an electric field around himself to warm up. Picking himself up off the floor, Megawatt asked, “What’s wrong with Coldfire?”
Diamond responded, “I dunno.”
A familiar voice answered, “She wanted to tell you herself, Dirk, but she’s expecting, and the stress of using her powers knocked her out.”
Mariness gasped, “Tabatha, what are you doing here?”
Tabitha shrugged. “I was worried you might need help, so I shrunk down and reduced my weight to minimum and hid in your boot heel.”
Megawatt knelt down by Coldfire and whispered, “Honey, I love you.”
Rex said in a subdued voice, “Try kissing her to wake her up. It works in the stories.”
Coldfire whispered, “He’s right. Feeling your joyous heart would be the best medicine.”
