The civilian-garbed heroes arrived at the circus early, despite Rex taking his kids to Hyper Burger for the start of his promised night of junk food. Unbeknownst to them, one of Speedster’s foes, the Jester, had decided to attend the show for some robbery and murder.
The youngsters enjoyed the show, laughing at the clowns, going ‘Ahh!’ about the acrobats, despite Daniel whispering that with his flight powers he could do just as well. The ringleader announced that the lion tamer was up next. Rex, muttering “I get enough Lion at ‘work’,” got up and asked the kids what they wanted from the snack bar.
Loretta said, “Cotton candy and root beer!”
Daniel seconded the root beer, but requested nachos.
Several rows away, Jester decided it was time to stop holding his peace. ‘After all,’ he mused, ‘riling up the lion might cause enough panic for me to rob the till.’ Standing up, he removed a realistic face mask to reveal the grease painted face of the Jester. No one reacted at first, thinking this was somehow part of the show, until Jester pulled a pistol and shot the ground right behind the lion. The beast reacted as Jester planned, attacking the trainer.
Jester waved at the lion and smirked. “Bye bye, Mr. lion. Please maul your trainer to pieces, long enough for me to rob the circus.”
The crowd naturally panicked, except for Daniel and Loretta. They had the presence of mind to let the crowd flow around them, and changed into their costumes. Stormwalker told his older sister, “Go save the trainer. I’ll use my powers to distract the lion.”
Loretta responded, “Just don’t hurt that innocent lion.”
Daniel rolled his eyes. “Duh!”
Diamond also ducked away to change into his costume, aiming to catch the gun-toting Jester. He had no idea what was going on in the center ring, but knew that a shot was fired and the bulletproof Diamond needed to catch the gunman before someone was killed.
Back at the big top’s main area, Stormwalker dropped a downpour on the poor lion. He didn’t know if the big cat reacted like the average housecat, but he needed to buy time for Loretta to rescue the tamer.
Firebug didn’t need to use her flame powers. She just flew in, scooped up the injured woman, and delivered her to the ambulance the circus had on standby.
She rejoined her brother to wrangle the scared and soaked lion. They had both seen the cage it had been released from and, using fire and lightning, herded the lion back into it.
Meanwhile, Diamond had managed to catch Jester in the midst of emptying the till into a sack that had comical dollar signs printed on it. The villain fired off the clip in to the ceiling hoping to buy himself time to escape the angry hero. No such luck. Diamond growled, “I’m guessing the circus can afford a piece of a new trailer roof. Now give it up so’s I can go back to enjoying the circus in peace with my kids.”
Jester, clearly out of ideas, threw his gun at the hero, hoping to buy himself time to escape. The gun just bounced off Diamond, who stomped it to pieces. Diamond smirked, “Hope you didn’t pay too much when you bought that piece.”
Jester was so frightened of Diamond that he ran directly into the custody of the police, who had arrived after the call about his disturbing the peace with shots fired.
Diamond was about to change back to Rex and look for his kids when one of the officers said, “Hey, Diamond… The kids that rescued the lion tamer and got the lion caged… Friends of yours?”
Diamond realized that for their quick thinking, he’d probably owe the kids ice cream on the way home. Saying nothing, he just nodded to the officer and flew back toward the rings, where Loretta was drying the floor from Daniel’s deluge, and her brother had just finished locking up the lion.
