Every teenage girl
perched on Long Island
in 1982
knows perfect feathers
are key to a good day.
1500 watts of energy needed
to dry every strand
to the follicle.
Ready, almost singing,
smelling of burnt silk
Wrapped around the golden
curling iron,
twirls of hair
form a long spiral
framing the Sea Breeze scrubbed face.
Done right, will brush out into
angelic feathers
able to turn heads
and attract eyes;
smearing frosted pink lipstick
singing “We Got the Beat”
with the Go-Go’s,
an invisible mist of hairspray
Freeze Frames the feathered locks.
She smiles,
prays for sun, to highlight her wings;
wind or rain could end the joy
of her crown.
And soon
rows of graduates
form a flock in their white gowns,
Seagulls, ready to soar into another decade
and release their feathers
for a fashionable bob.
Not until she dyes her hair
Magenta, does she her need for change
To wear an angelic crown,
She needs a Savior.
