“I know he’s not the kind of man I want you to spend your time with. Honestly, Suzanna: we’re just trying to look out for your best interests. He’s just not for you.”
“That’s not fair, Mom! You’ve never even met him.”
“I don’t need to meet him to know he’s wrong for you. He lives on a commune, Suzie. He doesn’t have a job; his band plays that awful heavy metal music and he’s been in jail! Jail, Suzanna. That alone should tell you he is not worth your time.”
“He was in jail for being part of a protest group, Mom. His group was trying to protest the construction of a nuclear plant. Once the cops saw none of them had guns, they let them go.”
“But, still, Suzanna…”
“And he does have a job, Mom. He makes candles and sells honey from the commune’s bees; and also sells goat’s milk and cheese. As for his group’s music, have you listened to the lyrics? His band is a Christian band, Mom.”
“I can’t get past the way that awful racket sounds, so I can’t imagine it could glorify God. Look, Suzanne, this is final: he’s just not right for you and we don’t want you seeing him.”
“Mom, that’s just not fair. Honestly, I think you’re trying to ruin my life. I don’t think you want me to have any fun.”
“Oh, Suzie, that’s just not true.”
“Really? It sure seems that way. You can’t see the worth in anyone who’s different. I know you and Daddy live a routine, boring life where everything fits an expected pattern and everyone likes and does the same things - and that’s just not fair.”
“You think we’re boring?”
“Yeah, I do. I think you and Daddy are Mr. and Mrs. Boring.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Boring?”
“Yeah.” Suzanne sighed.
Edwina sighed in return. Mrs. Boring? Her husband looked at her with a fond smile in his eyes, and reached over to squeeze her hand. “What do you think, Eddie? Should we tell her?”
Edwina’s mind spun back 20 years ago, to when she’d been 17 and thought she’d known how to direct her own life. One day she’d left the house without looking back; and followed her heart. Her heart had led her to hop on a motorcycle; hugging the back of its driver, Wolf. She’d loved Wolf desperately and would have done anything for him. Unfortunately, she did do “anything”, for the next three crazy years.
Three years later, she’d found herself abandoned and pregnant with Suzanna. She’d had no idea where to turn, so she’d wandered into a rescue mission, and had found both her physical and spiritual salvation. She’d been greeted with a smile and a kind pair of eyes, and a warm cup of coffee.
Edwina looked over into that same pair of kind eyes as she answered her husband, “Yes, maybe you’re right. It’s time.”
“Time for what?” fumed Suzanna.
Edwina began, “Suzie, have you ever wondered why your middle name is Harley…..?”
