When sky came into being, He had a tender thought, and a hue seeped in. The color was pleasing, and as God continued to make something out of nothing, it popped up everywhere...
Time moving through the day took on a visual display, and twilight gave way to dusk, evening ruled for a time, and then the depths of midnight made the perfect backdrop for the dazzling firmament fluttering off His fingertips, flickering into existence, twinkling for millennia.
At His command water gathered, in many sizes, shapes and configurations. That hue! It permeated the oceans, beautified seas, and made the lakes lovelier. Ponds reflected cloudless mornings and lazy afternoons, becoming places where He knew peace would prevail. Water exposed to cold hardened, producing the chill of ice blue.
He swept His hand over the land to introduce plant life, both practical and fanciful. Flowers budded and bloomed. Oh, the many flowers, each with its own shape, tint, and smell. One of the deepest shades of blue, indigo, played a small role in this production, and periwinkle made its spectacular debut.
Next, God's artistry and creativity crafted an endless procession of creatures of the sea, the land, and the air. From the tiny to the huge, in every location available, living things began to thrive. One of His most whimsical was a bird who seemed to personify vanity, strutting around sporting a heavy, fan-like tail. If the patterns and colors of the feathers somehow didn't attract attention, the bird's piercing scream did the trick. Another, much more modest bird had the honor of laying eggs in one of God's myriad blues. She didn't strut or scream, but she came to believe her own 'robin's egg blue' rivaled that other bird's color any day.
Yes, the peacock's display incorporated colors, plural, because God's genius couldn't be limited to just one color with varying tints and shades. His mind invented a dazzling plethora of many, many possibilities, and that was just the starting point. He then blended, lightened, or darkened each one to a place of perfection, His own divine rainbow.
And last, God placed His crowning creation, man, on the earth. Since then, man has gone on to discover some of the many treasures God tucked away in secret nooks, new beauties waiting patiently to be revealed. More azure items entered our lives and enhanced our world: the richness of sapphire, the brilliance of cobalt, the mellow of turquoise, and a gem so reminiscent of watery hues that it was named aquamarine.
A king chose blue as his favorite and frequently featured color, and the pantheon of blue shades included a new term, 'royal.'
And now, we, God's children, live our lives drenched in a vast spectrum of blues, from the lightest powder zipping through the eye-popping electric and darkening into the deepest navy. We don't often contemplate how wonderful a gift this collection is, how great an expression of God's love all of the colors really are.
Nevertheless, God gave us blue in all its glory to enjoy, with just one thought and in just one moment, because He knew us already, and loved us with a tenderness beyond measure.
