“Gorgeous, as usual. That shade of pink looks amazing on you, but you know your clients won’t see you.”
“Of course not, but I still want to look my best,” she said, admiring herself in the mirror.
“Are you nervous?”
“Oh, a little, but I’m sure the night will go just fine. Wish me luck,” she said, and dashed out of the apartment.
It was Fiona’s first night alone on the job with the Sand E. Man Corporation. She had trained for six weeks wth a supervising fairy, Mrs. Brennan and now she was a fully certified sand fairy ready to work alone.
When she got to the office the receptionist gave her her list of clients. She quickly read the names with the notations next to them:
David age three (sometimes fussy, but usually a good sleeper). Be there at 7:00 p.m.
Marie age six (lost first tooth today, so tooth fairy will arrive around 7:50 p.m.). Be there at 7:30 p.m.
Luke age seven, has to be up early tomorrow for soccer practice. Be there no later than 8:00 p.m.
“I only have three clients,” she said to the receptionist.
“I don’t make the lists. Corporate does. If you have a problem, let them know.”
“Oh, I don’t have a problem. I was just hoping to have a few more people to help on my first night as an official sand fairy.”
The receptionist dumped a small purple velvet purse on the counter. “You’ll need to take this.”
Fiona took the purse, put it across her body and left the office feeling elated to be finally have her dream job.
She was in David’s bedroom at 7:00 p.m. He was lying in his toddler bed but was fussing a little. She gently sprinkled some fairy dust in his eyes and sang him a sweet lullaby. Soon he was breathing deeply and she quietly left the room. It was getting late and she zipped over to Marie’s house.
Thankfully she got to Marie’s house right at 7:30 p.m, but the little girl was wide awake. Luckily, Fiona was so quiet Marie never knew she was in the room. She sprinkled the fairy dust into Marie’s eyes and within a few minutes her eyelids got heavy and she was fast asleep.
“Two down, one to go,” Fiona said gleefully.
When she got to Luke’s bedroom he looked very calm. She wondered if he only needed a small amount of fairy dust, but then she remembered the training manual stating a sand fairy must never leave a bedroom, especially a child’s bedroom, without using the company approved amount of fairy dust.
She sprinkled the dust in his eyes and was about to leave but he was already stirring. She sprinkled fairy dust again and before she could leave he was moving again. Her phone vibrated with a text from her supervisor that said: ‘Urgent. Come to the office right away.’
When she got to the office, Mrs. Brennan was waiting. “I’ve already had a complaint from the tooth fairy. While in Marie’s bedroom retrieving the tooth, the child woke up and chased her around the bedroom. As you can imagine, the tooth fairy is very upset. You know the tooth fairy association relies on us to make sure young children are asleep before they arrive.”
“I’m very sorry,” Fiona said. “I’m not sure what happened,” and she felt tears burning in her eyes.
“Let me see your fairy dust purse.” She opened it up and looked inside. “Just what I thought. This is snooze power not fairy sand dust. Look, snooze powder has a slightly pink tone to it.”
“But snooze powder is only for people needing afternoon naps.”
“It’s not your fault. The receptionist must have given you the wrong purse.”
“Oh, thank goodness.”
“Here’s a purse with fairy dust. You’ll need to go back to your clients and get them to sleep as soon as possible. Chin up. You’re a very dedicated employee. I think you’ll go far with this company.”
Fiona left the office smiling from ear to ear and returned to her clients' homes putting them all to sleep.
