The next winter, Darlene took me to the mall to shop for Christmas presents. We couldn’t get into Macy’s until she signed a hundred autographs. I crossed my arms and waited until the sea of people cleared a path for us.
“Glad that’s over with…now we can shop.” She smiled at me and took my hand and led me into the makeup session.
“Are you looking for a present for Mom?”
“Not yet. Let’s get makeovers.”
“But I’m only ten. I don’t wear makeup.”
“I’m sixteen, and I don’t wear makeup except at competitions. I was thinking of a better makeover.” Darlene asked the lady at the counter if she could make her look like a fancy lioness. She searched for an example on her phone.
This section of Macy’s tickled my nose. So many sample perfumes were sprayed, and I sneezed almost a hundred times in a row. It was worse than walking through Grandma’s rose garden.
“Are you ready to see your sister?” The lady turned Darlene around on a spinning chair to face me.
“Wow! You really look like a lioness! I wouldn’t even recognize you if you walked by me…unless you did a backflip.”
"Exactly. No one will recognize me. Now we can shop in peace.” She scrolled through some images. “What do you want to look like?”
“Hmmm. A bunny!”
“Okay. A bunny it is.”
In fifteen minutes, I was transformed. We were a bunny and a lioness enjoying a day at the mall admiring the Christmas decorations and singing “Jingle Bells.” Darlene’s idea worked. No one hounded her for an autograph. Crowds didn’t block our way trying to meet her.
Four years later at the Olympics again, Darlene was determined to win Gold. She did amazing on her floor routine, scoring the highest. I couldn’t watch her beam routine; my heart stopped with every flip. When I heard the crowd gasp, I looked up in horror. Darlene was twisted on the floor. My parents and I rushed down aisle and through the crowd to see her. Medics attended Darlene as she groaned. The music stopped, and everyone seemed to hold their breath as the EMT carried her away on a stretcher. I felt nauseous smelling the powder, sweat, and rubber mats after noticing a pool of blood where her head hit the floor. All I could do was pray while waiting at the hospital.

I wheeled my sister to the front of our packed church and handed her the microphone.
“I thought my life was over when I fell off the beam and couldn’t move my legs. When the doctor told me I injured my spinal cord and was paralyzed, I was sure I’d never be happy again. But God showed me how to have joy in Him…”
Darlene’s testimony was powerful. When she finished, the church stood and clapped. She would always attract crowds who want her autograph, but now she uses her fame as an opportunity to touch lives. My sister happens be a superstar who learned how to win the best gold medal, the one that lasts for eternity.
