Oh, you know…staying very busy.
For example?
Well, let me see. As soon as I could walk I took off into childhood like a rocket, went to school, played sports, did a few chores, listened to many hours of loud and explicit music, attended concerts, graduated, partied, entered college, partied, graduated again.
Yes, sounds as if you were engaged in a lot of frenzied activity. Anything else?
Sure. I found a job, got married, had kids, bought a house, cut grass once a week for years and years, worked on this or that vehicle, saw tons of movies, ran marathons, played a lot of golf, painted way too many walls, and attended my share of boring weddings and funerals.
Did you do anything for your brother?
Uh…you know I don’t have a brother. (Why are you shaking your head? Did I miss that one?)
How about your neighbors?
Sorry. Don’t know who they are, although on Thursday nights I hear an elderly man trying to wheel his trash can to the curb. It’s kind of noisy. I think his wife died. At least I don’t hear her calling the cat anymore. Maybe it was Fluffy who passed. No clue.
Now that you have come to the end, do you think you had a fulfilling, meaningful life?
Hmm…I guess as good as the next fellow. I had a nice home and more than sufficient income and retirement. My kids all had straight teeth and married the right people. My spouse tolerated me well enough as we muddled through. I certainly stayed busy.
You just don’t understand, do you?
Oh! You mean did I go to church? Well, of course. Everyone in my group knew how important it was to show up, especially on Easter and Christmas. We were friendly people; never hurt anybody.
Sadly, that’s not what I mean. Let me try again. Did you ever tell anyone about ME? Did you spend time in fellowship with ME? Did you ask ME for guidance and direction, and then actually listen?
I always thought I’d do some of that before the, uh...the end, but it looks like the end is here, doesn’t it?
Are you surprised?
Yeah, it came a whole lot faster than I imagined.
When I left instructions for you to occupy until my return, what did you think that meant?
I guess I figured I was occupying. I stayed very active and involved in community projects, politics, and charities. There never seemed to be time to get too deeply into that spiritual stuff. Is that what you mean?
No.
I thought I was doing pretty well. I’ve never been in prison or killed anybody. I tried not to cheat or lie; well, not too much anyway.
*Sigh
Excuse me, Sir. Are those tears on your face?
Yes.
Wait! Don’t close the door. Can’t I come in? I was a GOOD person! Please, give me a chance.
You were very busy doing things that don’t count. You did not obey my commands.
That doesn’t seem fair! YOU KNOW ME!
Sorry…I never knew you.
