ADD TO MY FAVORITES
Being moderator gave Green control, and hopefully the ability to sway votes. Unrest and vitriol had risen across the nation over what was the best color. Some refused to coexist in the same box with unpopular colors. Today’s meeting was an effort to bring peace and harmony.
Over one hundred colors took a seat. In the front row sat the other original seven colors. Red spoke first. “I’m the most important. I’m used in expressions of love and romance. Without love and romance, the country would fall into ruin.”
“Pfft!” Pink wagged a finger. “I’m the favorite color for love and romance.”
Red shot Pink a scathing look. “You’re a secondary color, weakened by adding White to me, so shut up.”
“White is not a color, but absence of color.” Yellow shook a fist in the air.
White lunged at Yellow. “Don’t insult me. I am a color. You who blind people with your brightness.”
Green pounded the gavel, secretly pleased at the surliness. “Please control yourselves. Absolutely no physical violence. And, someone give Pink a tissue.”
“Red hurt my feelings.” Pink dabbed at her eyes.
“Over-sensitive crybaby,” Red mumbled.
Blue puffed out his chest. “It should be obvious I am the most valuable. I am the color of sky and ocean. Where would Earth be without things my color provides?”
Green chuckled to himself. Was Green not more valuable than Blue? Green was grass, plants, trees, and even oceans at times. Green refrained from pointing this out until the end when votes were cast. At lunch he would circulate and drop this information into others’ ears. It could not be construed as influencing votes if it was truth.
Black jumped to his feet. “It should be I who is a favorite. Animals boast my color. Women dress in my color for elegance and a slimming effect. People fall asleep as I descend on night.”
“Sometimes night with a full moon is more me,” Gray said.
“Yes, Gray, you are correct, but you are another color created by adding White, aren’t you?” Green spoke with a smirk, but gently, to take the sting from his words.
White snarled, “I can blend to make other colors, therefore, I am most valuable.”
Orange rose slowly. “I am as the phoenix. My color is the sun, rising each morning with brightness and warmth. I am majestic. I should be the favorite, for Earth revolves around the sun, as all colors should revolve around me.”
Green didn’t hide his snickering.
Brown guffawed, then doubled over with laughter. “Yellow might disagree with you about the sun’s color. Quit acting so sanctimonious, Orange. You would not exist if Yellow and Red did not blend to make you. You would be nothing.”
Orange flamed at the cacophony of laughter. “Don’t make me mad or I’ll generate heat and destroy all of you. Who needs you? I can color the world by myself.”
Silence fell. “Please, no threats. No bullying, either.” Green used his authoritative voice. He felt smug that with all the fighting, he would be hailed as the superior color. His smile faded as all eyes turned on Purple.
She rose, chin high, and arms held aloft as if to conduct an orchestra. “You’re all so arrogant.” Purple’s voice vibrated with emotion. “Royalty should reign, and the world knows Purple signifies royalty. Purple has adorned kings and rulers throughout the ages, therefore, I am royalty. I am supreme above all colors.”
“Another braggart who wouldn’t exist without the blending of two colors, Blue and Red. Sit down, Purple. You’re not royalty.” Brown poked Purple for emphasis.
Chaos erupted then. Insults flew. Punches were thrown. Everyone pushed, shook fists, and yelled. Pink, Magenta, Fuchsia, and Lavender cowered and sobbed.
Green paled with fear. It was anarchy. This wasn’t what he wanted. Like an epiphany, Green realized all colors were important. No color was more valuable than the other. Each contributed to beauty and balance in the world. Each was unique and needed.
Green called for order. A hush fell on the crowd as Green spoke. “I decree all are perfectly created. Each has a purpose no other color can fulfill. Let’s declare today as United Color Day.”
Colors cheered in agreement. And thus, it was so.
