Tommy’s mocking started on the bus that morning and lasted for most of the hour- long trip across town. He was relentless with his litany of jeering comments towards me as if he’d spent hours in preparation for his assault. By the time the bus arrived at school, I already had my fill of Tommy.
After stepping off the bus, I made my way to sponsor class, a ten-minute period where role was taken and school announcements were made. The students filed in and sat in their appointed seats. As I sat in the front row, Tommy sat three rows back.
Before a whole new audience, he began again where he left off on the bus and continued harassing me with snide remarks. I tried to ignore him, yet my face was getting hotter as I sensed a strong calling to carry out justice upon the little bully. Words ran through my mind with a plan on how I would launch my counter attack, humiliating him with no mercy. He wouldn’t know what hit him.
A sense of imminent victory pounded in my chest as I took a deep breath. I jumped up and spun around to face my adversary, and 20 other onlookers with surprise on their faces. Tommy glared at me with a smirk. I narrowed my eyes at him with a scowl. Pointing my finger at Tommy, like brandishing a deadly weapon, I hissed, “Tommy, you bother me in the classroom, and you bother me on the buu…”
Then it happened.
Somewhere between the ‘u’ and the ‘s’ in ‘bus’, a bountiful amount of saliva rolled out of my mouth, cascaded down, and landed on the shoe of the boy who sat behind me – spot on. "EEEEWW,” the entire class howled in unison. “She’s got rabies,” the boy with the defiled shoe added with apparent disgust as he pulled his foot back under his desk.
I jerked around and collapsed into my seat. My head hit the desk with a thump as I crossed my arms over my head. In a heap of humiliation, I stayed in that position for the remaining minutes until class was dismissed. After the lingering sounds of sniggering had left the room, I slowly raised to my feet, picked up my books, and slunk out the door.
My world had suddenly changed to a brilliant shade of red as I trudged the halls. News of the incident quickly spread, and by the end of the day it seemed a landslide decision by many to bestow upon me the nickname ‘Droolie’.
As the days progressed, so did the retelling of the incident. More and more students seemed eager to hear the story from anyone who had been so blessed to witness the event. It’s as if I had reached some kind of weird celebrity status and achieved a best comedy of the year award. Students I didn’t even know would call out my nickname from across hallways, classrooms, cafeteria. Many seemed curious about me. “Is that the girl you told me about?” I would hear one whisper to another as I walked by.
Memories of the event stayed fresh in the minds of a surprising number of my peers for the remaining two years of junior high. And even in my freshman year of high school, I was amazed at the impression it had left with so many. “Remember when you drooled on that kids foot in front of class?” they’d guffaw as if reminiscing on some cherished memory that bound us together. I’d smile, glad to know I at least made someone laugh, and in the process, learned how to laugh at myself.
I don’t remember what ever happened to Tommy, but I believe God used him that day in a most peculiar way. I was hot headed and more than willing to lash out with revenge on the kid. But God had a different plan and was instilling a valuable truth in me.
The meek shall inherit the earth.
