"How was tennis practice, honey?"
"Awesome! We were assigned our mixed doubles partners today.
Mine is Jeremy Heins, and he is so cute!"
Nikki's mom smiled. "Great, but does he play well?"
"Oh yes. We won our first match easily. I think we'll do really
well. He's one of the top players on the boys' team."
"I hope it turns out to be a good match."
Nikki groaned. "Oh Mom. You and your puns."
Nikki looked out her window and twirled a lock of shoulder-length
chestnut hair. "He also asked me to homecoming."
"And you said..."
"I said I'd let him know tomorrow."
"What do you know about him?"
"Not a lot. He's in my chemistry class, on the honor role, and
plays tennis."
"Do you know if he is a believer?"
"Not yet. That's not the first thing I ask people. It's just a
date to homecoming, Mom, not a marriage proposal."
"True, but most marriage proposals these days start with a date.
Scripture doesn't require arranged marriages, but as you know, it
does require being equally yoked."
"I know, but none of the guys from youth group or the One Way
Club at school has asked me. It could be a good witnessing
opportunity."
"Nice try, Nikki, but you know the witness and faith must come
first, before chemistry can get in the way."
Nikki sighed. "That's what I figured you'd say. I think I'm
going to be an old maid."
Nikki's mom pulled in to the garage. "I doubt it, sweetheart.
God will bring the right young man in to your life, who will
value your faith and gifts, in His perfect time. Would you
please set the table while I put the salad and dressing
together?"
*****
"Please pass the dressing, Dad."
Nikki held the stopper tightly on the cruet and shook. "Mom,
what your vinaigrette really needs is a surfactant."
"Is that a fact? What is a sur-fact-ant?"
Nikki rolled her eyes. "It's a substance, like honey, mustard,
or egg yolk, that keeps the oil and vinegar from separating."
"Ah, so you want your dressing equally yolked."
Nikki nearly spewed her mouthful. "Okay, Mom, that was a pretty
good volley. I have one of my own. I'll invite Jeremy to youth
group."
Nikki's dad looked between them. "I think I missed something..."
*****
"So how about homecoming, Nikki?"
"How about youth group tomorrow night at Faith Fellowship?"
"You're kidding, right? Or is that your way of saying no."
"It's a way to get to know each other better, and give my parents
a chance to meet you."
"You're serious! I didn't know you are one of those
fable-believing, science-denying types. What are you doing in
honors chemistry if you think science is irrelevant?"
"Just because I don't believe in the THEORY of macroevolution
doesn't mean I believe that science is not relevant. Whom do you
suppose established the laws of science?"
"Never mind. I see we wouldn't have good chemistry."
"A lot of people think that hormones make good chemistry, but as
we saw in our lab yesterday, it is the surfactant that is
critical to forming a stable emulsion. When physical chemistry
fades, if there is no faith chemistry the relationship cannot
hold together."
"Whatever. At least you can play a good game of tennis."

Ps. 19:9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the
judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine
gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of
them there is great reward.
2 Cor. 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers:
for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and
what communion hath light with darkness? 6:15 And what concord
hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with
an infidel? 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with
idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said,
I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate,
saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will
receive you.
6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and
daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
