We all choose different roads;
Creeping or running or walking
And carrying motley loads.
For some of us, the trip is long
For others, the jaunt is brief;
But all of us will travel it—
This road of life in bas relief.
Hungry and thirsty, we travel,
Through thick and thin we’re compelled
To seek out the bread-like manna
And drink from The Living Well.
Sailing on waters so smoothly
Or plodding through thorny ground,
We glide through time’s oasis
Or trudge up hills, falling down.
Often confused and tormented,
We pull off this trackless road;
Only to yield and discover
We’re now with the status-quo.
We play in their streets well-trodden,
We taste their wines and rich foods;
We can’t get enough to fill us
And empty, turn back, subdued.
Like prodigal sons we return
To the narrow route we left;
Welcomed, encouraged by brothers
Who rescued us from the cleft.
Our faith is the only answer,
“In God we trust,” our prayer;
We walk, we run, and we stumble,
Rejecting Satan’s bold fare.
The pilgrimage is not easy,
Nor strewn with beds of roses;
But God, the Lord, walks beside us,
Just as He did with Moses.
In the sunlight or the shadow,
We keep our eyes uplifted;
Rescuing, helping and sharing,
Burdens brothers re-shifted.
Abundant living is our fate
As His Word we devour
Fulfilled promises raining down
In pure, refreshing showers.
The bitter with the sweet we learn
To take in stride, as follows:
Praying and praising, as we go,
Now—and for all tomorrows.
This path from earth to glory
As Christians, we must travel;
Across the hills and valleys,
As time becomes unraveled.
This world we now are traveling in
And things we see, are surreal;
Heaven—now THAT’S the reality,
The future world soon unsealed!
So trudge along, tired pilgrim,
Rewards are beyond the bend;
Keep your feet on the narrow road
Until you sleep or ascend!
