grasped each end of the flag.
Choosing decorum over emotion,
the pain gave a grim line to their lips.
Singed, torn, and stained with blood,
the fabric succumbed to two length wise turns,
then thirteen diagonal turns.
Careful not to damage the symbol of
freedom
any further,
they gingerly knelt before the weeping woman
and set the blue triangle in her lap.
Her trembling fingers picked it up and
held it to her breast.
The music,
the anthem that meant so much in the past,
would not be played today, but somehow she couldn’t remember how it went, anyway.
The struggle raged for years.
Gradually the symbol of the great nation
faded, like water added to paint.
The bold, defined lines blurred with each battle.
Where would she store the now meaningless relic?
The casket displayed no flowers,
only discolored stamps where
Law ripped crosses from the wood.
Lady Liberty stood
Approached the cavernous casket
Tossed the flag inside
And then disappeared from view.

I'm assuming the free fall is our nations departing from God's grace?
