When consenting to the wage each man was duly greeted
They removed rocks from fertile fields, these brawny men of might
Sweat soaked their denim shirts as each burned the season’s light
With diligence they carried on as more helpers were assigned
To come and work beside them, their muscles less defined
Enthusiasm filled these men so eager to get started
Nothing about their efforts through the morning was half-hearted
Just about mid-day additional men came toting hoes
Their task was to carve furrows in straight and narrow rows
This fresh crew had graying hair with stubble on their chins
The younger men were doubtful that they’d make it to days end
When the sun came to rest on a ridge in the distance
A rather motley trio was provided for assistance
The owner stood before the crews as dusk turned skies to gray
Happily he gave each worker their agreed-upon days pay
No matter the length of hours, each worker earned the same
When arguments broke out the owner dared to explain
Didn’t you each agree to work for the pay received
Why is it that my generous heart causes yours to be peeved
Accuse me not of cheating--I joyfully gave what’s mine
It isn’t always easy being the one who’s last in line
What matters is their willingness--each gave to me their best
Please understand my motive, please silence each protest
Matthew 20:13-15 (NLT) He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage? Take it and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you. Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be angry because I am kind?’
