TITLE: Worn Out Shoes and Tattered Clothes | Previous Challenge Entry

She clung to what her faith stood for,
Her clapboard house close by the tracks
Helped her to share and to give back.
Contented Granny rocked and grinned
As she told of days from way back when,
She recalled a hobo she once met
Who rode the rails with Pal, his pet.
He begged for food at her screened door
Granny gladly gave him that and more.
As the stranger ate she shared beliefs,
His dog relaxed with scraps of beef.
Favorite verses she would read
His blue eyes smiled at her good deed.
“Can’t recall time better spent,”
He tipped his hat and off he went.
Sweet Granny paused and gave a wink,
I bet I know just what you think.
Grandson Pete expressed his view--
Back then was that the thing to do?
Has being kind gone out of style
Does it cost to give away a smile,
Wrinkled hands caressed her grandson’s face
Acknowledging the world’s a different place.
Your grand-dad, well he just agreed
That we should reach out to those in need,
And we were all the richer for it
The command to love--we can’t ignore it.
Frustration furrowed Pete’s stubby brows--
Gran, lots has changed since then and now,
You can’t go trustin’ scroungin’ strangers
They’re losers Gran, they all spell danger.
Son, worn out shoes and tattered clothes
Don’t mean they’re bad like you suppose,
Each has a story behind the reason
They wander alone in their dry season.
Granny digressed to the hobo man
And shared with Pete one godly plan,
Two decades gone since first they met
When he came to visit without his pet.
He claimed God’s words once ingested
Were pondered o’er, and sometimes tested,
One stormy night in summer’s heat
He prayed for shelter, a safe retreat.
And just as swift as his “Amen”
Pal ran off from his trusted friend,
Chilled from pelting drops of rain
He searched for Pal and called his name.
Lightning sliced the angry sky
Revealing a place to keep them dry,
There within that rundown shack
He lost his itch for railroad tracks.
He settled down in Logan County
Farming land God blessed with bounty.
One Spring trip to town for grain
Caused him to lose his heart to Jane.
They courted, married, and worked the land
Their pages penned by God’s own hand,
To God they gave all praise and glory
For writing them a lovely story.
Pete, life has many twists and turns
Pray you’ll learn how to discern
A heart sincere--one with real needs
From one whose motive stems from greed.
