We rub a lamp three times
And chant our petitions,
And then, when we don’t get the handouts
We have coveted,
We get angry at the genie
Created in our image.
We play games with fire,
And then curse God
When we get burnt,
And the pain doesn’t disappear
Instantly.
Maybe if we just
Rub the lamp a little harder,
Or rub it four times, or five,
We’ll get the candy
We tantrum for.
Or maybe if we play our games with God,
Trying to twist him
To fit our rules,
He will someday give in
To what we want.
Or maybe
God never was a genie,
And His dreams for us
Are bigger than watching us
Lick lollipops.
Does God set banquets before us
Only to snatch the feast away
As we reach for a bite,
With drool dripping
From our lips?
Or does he dare to give us
The love we really need,
Refusing to give His children the poison
We’ve been begging for?
