To be perfect,
To be happy—
Reciprocal words
In my young mind
Perfectly happy.
Happily perfect.
When did this twisted truth begin—that
Perfect is and must be thin?
Time wasted binging
To fill a void;
More and more
Was never enough.
Did swallowing sweet sensations
Satisfy days of deprivation?
Time wasted purging
Like spilling fuel,
More and more
Till empty again.
Empty
Down
To
My
Soul.
Did starving ever strip away
The pain that swirled my slender frame?
A scale judged me
In numbers;
Lower and lower
Was never low enough.
Did I hope to be paper thin
And disappear like dying wind?
Time wasted hiding,
Consuming in corners,
Like a black widow spider
In lonely darkness
While others slept.
Time wasted worrying;
Did anyone see?
Did anyone know
What consumed my time?
Time wasted avoiding:
Avoiding food,
Avoiding friends,
Avoiding life.
Time wasted hating
Me.
Until
A new principle consumed me,
Conceived from the Word:
To be perfect,
To be happy
Was to
Learn God loved me
As I was...
Perfect in Him.
