“Tell me what you truly think.”
She readied herself for their special night,
But now she feared her dress too tight.
She eyed herself in their cheval mirror,
With sagging spirit, she swiped a tear.
His white lie said, “You’re lovely dear.”
The dye job on her chestnut hair
Went awry so she gasped and stared,
“Oh no, this wasn’t my request,”
She looked to friends she labeled “best”.
Tell me true--don’t hesitate,
Their kindly words would not berate.
Their white lie said, “On you, pink’s great!”
A high school reunion now assembled--
Twenty years older meant classmates trembled
For fear of not being recognized,
Due to balding heads and larger thighs.
Each name badge held their yearbook face
Young teenage smiles to be pinned in place.
And little white lies were dressed in grace.
So are these lies as black as sin,
Or does the Lord forgive us when
We dare to spare another’s heart,
Instead of pain to them impart.
Okay Lord, here’s my confession,
I’ll tell more lies if they will lessen
The burden of someone’s depression.
