Shepherds abiding, watching with care.
These creatures preserved for Passover’s Temple,
Unknowing, they frolic, no need to beware.
At nightfall the twinkling stars in the heavens,
Joined ranks with the moon, in lighting the earth.
When lo! in the heavens, an angelic chorus,
Proclaimed to the shepherds, a new Savior’s birth.
The herders, excited, they hastened to see Him,
A bleating of lambs, joined the angels in song.
The slumbering night, awak’ning with glory.
A heralded praise to whom praises belong.
One little lamb caught up in the melee,
Chased after the shepherds, to David’s small town.
With eyes on his master, sojourned to a stable,
Cattle and donkeys and other lambs ‘round.
Burly and brawny, the Shepherds pushed forward,
Longing to see whom the angels foretold,
Bowing before, this Promise of ancients,
Fulfillment of proph’cy, told, long, long ago
The lamb nudged to see who caused the commotion,
An infant asleep; not yet Herod’s scorn.
The stable alive with God’s radiant glory.
