They brought their trees in for a while
In winter darkness with no sun
The tree foretold of spring to come.
In ancient Rome those winters days
They brightened up in cheerful ways
With boughs of trees and radiant lights
And shards of metal glinting bright
In Britain mistletoe became
Part of the Druid’s claim to fame
For them it stood for life eternal
And with it banished things infernal
The folks that lived in Germany
Would choose a green and luscious tree
Inside or out, the tree would bring
The promise of the coming spring
St Boniface found a pagan band
Child sacrifice was what they planned
To a tree they’d tied a boy
A knife in hand soon to deploy
Bonny spoke of God’s great love
Of heaven’s treasures up above
He spoke of Jesus’ life laid down
A silence settled all around
His words found hearts as soft as snow
The boy untied was free to go
The tree was felled, their old faith too
The fir tree stood for faith so new
Martin Luther clothed his tree
With candles, for the stars we see
They twinkled in the darkest night
Reminding him of Jesus’ light
When Albert came from Germany
He took with him his Christmas tree
His wife, Victoria, the Queen
Announced it was the best she’d seen
In very house, the idea spread
They followed where the Great Queen led
A tree became the must-have thing
With all the stuff that trees would bring
Of course, it didn’t take shops long
To join the money making throng
Angels, tinsel, stars and lights
And other strange and rare delights
In all the time and money spent
Is this the way that Bonny went?
To lose the sense of Jesus’ birth
In empty, crass, commercial mirth?
The truth may soon be so obscured
And us to Santa’s grotto lured
Behind the tree and pretty lights
Do we perceive God’s real delights?
