Hoping he would find ‘the way’.
His mind was clouded with thoughts of past hurts
And offenses of yesterday.
He saw a large sign on the side of this road
Advertising ‘Religions Sold Here!’
Perhaps this was it, the place that would make
The rest of his life become clear.
“Welcome, my friend!” the clerk said with a smile
As he ushered him through the front door.
“How can I help you? Our selection is vast
And unlike anything you’ve seen before.”
The man stared around him, in wonder and awe,
At the shelves filled with faith of all kinds.
Surely what he lacked was up there somewhere.
His ‘way’ he would certainly find!
The clerk led him over to a brightly lit shelf.
“Let’s start over here,” he began.
“We’ll find a faith that fits you just right
And get you back on your way again.”
“You look like the non-traditional type,
Someone with a mind of his own.”
The man nodded proudly. Someone understood!
Finally he wasn’t alone!
The clerk showed him a package, bright and appealing,
“What about this one?” he asked.
“It’s the Anti-Traditional Freestylist Church.
Its popularity is growing fast!”
The man shrugged his shoulders, then shook his head twice.
“Nah, I’ve seen that one a lot.
I’m looking for something a bit more obscure.
So tell me…what else have you got?”
The clerk looked around. “Now, here’s a fine faith.
Something that’s new and unique.
The name is exotic, Nouveau Soul Enigmatists,
Sort of gives it an air of mystique!”
Looking it over, the man made a face.
“Seems complicated…not quite my style.”
“Very well, then,” the clerk quickly answered him back,
“Perhaps you’d like to browse for a while.”
Looking around this unusual store,
Something vivid caught the man’s eye.
He looked a bit closer, then said with a grin,
“I think I’ll give this one a try.”
The clerk took the package down from the shelf,
Then said with a chill in his voice,
“Perfect for a free-thinker such as yourself:
Neo-Relative Selfists, good choice!”
A swipe of his card and the sale was complete.
The clerk spoke as he walked toward the door,
“Come see us again if your needs should change and
Thanks for shopping our Religion Store!”
The man stepped through the door, back to the wide road
And continued along his way,
Tragically unaware, for the choice he had made,
The true price he would have to pay.
