Skin thick and tough
Grasps the plough
With wood smooth
Weather worn handles
Oxen swing and sway
In front of me
Soil torn and turned
Behind
My gaze fixed
On a distant horizon
Heavy cloak
Horse hair and holy
Fragrant with mountain air
And singed by fire
Falls on my shoulders
Duty and obligation
Woven into warp
Passion and purpose
Interlaced with every strand
The whisper of
A still small voice
Lingers
Question asked
Answer sought
I chase the prophet
He doubts
That I can move forward
Without looking back
He thinks
The love of family glows brighter
Than other loves
And tells me to go back
Calloused palms
Skin thick and tough
Grasps the knife
With wood smooth
Weather worn handle
Oxen swing and sway
As blood spills
A crimson tide
Flesh torn
Plough smashed and splintered
Ignited
Fire licks and flames rise
Oxen roasted
A last supper
Solemnly shared
Question asked
Answer given
The prophet
Strides before me
I follow
A different plough
To wield
A different soil
To turn
My gaze fixed
On a different horizon
I don’t look back
