She had been preparing since she was in elementary school, learning physical combat and how to deal with the challenges of having superhero parents. One of the earliest lessons her father had drilled into her was, “Ya gotta protect your identity and the rest of the family’s.” Of course her little brother, Don, was only a toddler when Diamond impressed this rule and no one knew if either he or she were going to develop powers. In any event, Loretta learned how to dissemble, with all the skills of her parents.
Her devotion to her father’s rule was sorely tested the first time she dealt with a minor supervillain. Dr. Mean, a standard technopath who activated his weapons with just his mind, easily captured her and yanked her mask off. He taunted her, “Well, young lady, regrettably you aren’t distinctive enough in appearance for me to figure out who your parents are. However, my emotion manipulator will get you to reveal who they are.”
Dr. Mean telepathically twisted a dial on an unusual gun and Loretta felt her desire to defend her secrets diminish. Hoping his plan had worked, he asked her, “Now, who are your parents?”
“My name is Firefly and my parents are Diamond and Mariness,” she ground out.
The evil doctor twisted the dial on his gun to a higher setting and shot at her again. After he blasted her again, he repeated his question. She repeated her answer as if by rote.
Dr. Mean looked over the barrel of his gun sadly at the teenaged pyrokenitic. “You seem like a bright girl, and strong willed. I can turn up the setting to the point of shattering your willpower. I could even turn you into someone who would defend me after destroying your will. Do you want me to use the maximum setting, or will you talk willingly?”
Loretta had been given more than powers and training by her parents. She had also received a thorough grounding in the Christian faith. As she stared mutely at Dr. Mean she prayed, ‘Jesus, please give me the spiritual strength to defeat this villain and defend my family.’
Instantly, in response to her prayer, she felt her will strengthen, and she decided that playing along might give her time to make Mean go on the defensive. Firefly made her voice come out in a croak, “I’m so thirsty, water, please?”
Hearing her voice sound so desparate made Mean grin triumphatly and turn his back on her to get her some water.
As soon as the villain turned away, Loretta burned away her restraints and stood to face him in a defensive crouch. When Mean turned back with a cup of water in his hand and his gun in its holster, he wasn’t ready for the teen heroine’s bold action.
Firefly fired a pinpoint blast at his weapon, melting its controls. Then she used an intense heat field to dehydrate Mean.
With the villain passed out, she retrieved her mask and called her parents, since she wasn’t supposed to reveal herself to the authorities. Loretta told her parents what had happened on her training mission, and her mother praised her excitedly. “Ya did good, hija, you defeated him and didn’t tell him our secrets.”
Diamond found his way to Firefly’s location by tracing her communication signal. With Mean still unconscious, he greeted his daughter with a super-strength hug and complimented her as well. “You did real good defending the family.”
Loretta responded, “Dad, I can’t take all the credit. God gave me the strength to defend my mind against his ray gun.”
Rex Brand ruffled his daughter’s hair as he thought, ‘Giving credit to the LORD, she’s learned more than superheroing from me and Rebecca.’
Aloud, all he said was, “Indeed! Now head home, young lady, while I hand him over to the cops,'cause despite this, you’re not ready for them yet.”

Maybe I've just lost the ability to fly and dream inside the characters in comics. As a kid The Phantom, could do nothing wrong. Tarzan ruled the jungle and Superman the skies.
Great imagery.
There's defense in every aspect of your story.
Enjoyable read. Thank you!
