When his mom left, Dirk opened the bag to see Rex’s morphing belt. Before Megawatt could ask, Rex spoke in a resigned voice.
“I’m givin' up bein' Diamond.”
Dirk’s response, while not profound, was direct, “Why?”
Rex sat down. Speaking over the ignored TV Rex unburdened himself to his friend and teammate. "I'm feelin' frustrated after the court case when I had to testify against the Mad Blaster. When I got my powers, I thought I’d be spendin' my time beatin' up bad guys and savin' people. I didn’t expect to have to deal with a verbal smackdown by some lawyer who’s tryin' to make herself famous by gettin' bad guys out of prison. I’ve had it. Someone else can help the team.”
Here his voice grew rougher with anger. “Maybe someone with patience for all this procedural junk...”
Megawatt had imagined himself following in his father’s footsteps and becoming a minister. He knew that would require counselling people who came to him with their problems, but hadn’t figured on doing it while still in highschool. As he pondered what he should say, he heard over his communicator the voice of their teammate Blue Flame. “Megawatt, Mariness and I have run into a problem. I’ve tried to call Diamond, but he’s not answering.”
Megawatt, with a thought, morphed into his costume and spoke loudly enough for both Rex and Blue Flame to hear. “What’s the problem, Flame?”
There was a crackle over the communicator, then Blue Flame answered, “A pair of Speedster’s villains decided to try their luck here instead of facing Speedster. I thought we were doing enough to slow them down until we could call for backup, but Drainer sapped my powers, and Lady Freeze has Mariness encased in an ice block. Help quickly!"
Rex grabbed the bag back from Dirk’s hands. “They’re hurting Rebecca! I’m going to stop them!”
Strapping on his morphing belt, Rex also changed into his costume. Megawatt was torn between relief that his friend wasn’t giving up their hero work, and the fact that it took his girlfriend being endangered to snap him out of his funk.
Still he followed the hot headed hero out through the open den window. They followed the directional beam Blue Flame had left open, and arrived shortly at the River Edge First National Bank. Fortunately, the police who had surrounded the building knew enough to accept help from the costumed teens. Diamond had to be held back, barely, by Megawatt. Megawatt mused that it was a good thing that Diamond hadn’t fully changed into his Diamond form, or he’d have had no chance of holding him back.
Diamond turned on his team leader and growled low enough so only Megawatt could hear, “Enough playin' around. I’m goin' in and rescuin' Rebecca.”
Megawatt spoke as quietly, “Sure, you can rescue Rebecca, but we need a plan.”
A moment later they had a plan in place. Megawatt hoped that the bank was well insured against the damage they were going to cause, because he planned on Diamond smashing through the drive-thru window, startling the supercrooks, while he flew in behind to stun them with his lightning bolts. "Let's go!"
Rex smashed through the bullet-proof plexiglass. Seeing his teammates down, he roared a challenge at the villains.
Drainer shot a bolt of his power at Diamond, who redirected the blast at Lady Freeze, striking her unconscious, landing just next to the frozen Rebecca. Diamond swatted Drainer away as he would pesky gnats, and crushed the ice that was holding Mariness.
Megawatt was a bit too far away to be certain, but he thought he heard Diamond say, holding back tears, “I’m sorry I thought I’d had enough and wasn’t there for ya.”
Her response was non-verbal, but Megawatt appreciated it nonetheless, as her arms wrapped around Diamond's neck and their lips met.
