A few seconds later, I gulped when Nani excitedly squealed and pointed, “There’s my village! That’s my village up there!”
When we finally arrived via some secondary roads and then a rutted dirt road, the little village was teeming with excitement. The little church, decorated with banana leaves and balloons, was the center for special activities—singing, special choirs, children’s skits, speeches, and dancing. And in front of the speakers’ lectern were the gifts from a bountiful harvest of rice, all shapes and sizes of squash, pomelo, bananas, and much more.
Peering out the window my eyes were drawn to bamboo tables, shaded with a bamboo-supported canopy. Smells of fried pork, steamed rice, and a tasty potato soup drifted through the open window. The cooks of the village had been busy since sunrise. There was no turkey or pumpkin pie, but I was not disappointed!
While soaking in the events of this harvest celebration, I thought about another harvest—a harvest that Jesus talked about in John 4:35-38. I often get discouraged that I can’t see the fruit of my labor. I don’t see many coming to Jesus because of something I said or did. But Jesus reminds us, “One sows and another reaps...”
There may be times someone does accept Jesus soon after I have spoken to them, but lest I think too highly of myself, Jesus finishes that passage of Scripture by saying, “I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
I think Jesus is saying that if I have planted or cultivated in His fields, I have had as much success as the harvesters. Sometimes I will have the privilege of harvesting where someone else has already done the planting and watering. When I think about Thanksgiving, I think back to that Thanksgiving day in Nani’s village. And I also think about the harvest Jesus talked about. One person was not responsible for the harvest enjoyed by that small remote village. The same is true for God’s Kingdom. We must all work together to celebrate the harvest together!
