“Hey, I wanted to invite you to my small group that’s meeting at my house this weekend. We are starting a new study that I think you would like.”
Sam laid his report down and took a sip of coffee. “Aww, man, I’m living a pretty good life. I don’t need that church stuff. I’m guilty of a couple little sins, but nothing big. Surely God wouldn’t hold it against me.”
Before Robert could reply, Sam exclaimed, “Oh, crap! I just dripped coffee on my report.”
With a twinkle in his eye, Robert responded, “Oh, don’t worry. It’s just a little spot.”
“Well, I can’t turn it in like this. I’ll have to run another copy.” Sam began to search his computer for the document.
“So, just a little spot ruined the whole copy, huh?” Robert suggested slyly.
Sam grunted as he hit the ‘print’ key.
“You know, just as our boss won’t tolerate a smudged report, God can’t tolerate sin no matter how insignificant we think it is. That is why Jesus’ sacrifice was necessary.”
Robert turned to leave, then tossed out a final invitation, “If you change your mind, you are always welcome to join us.”
At the end of the day, Robert was clearing his desk to leave when Sam stopped by on his way out, “Hey, ummm. What time is your group meeting?”
This little story is based on two significant Bible verses—“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 (NIV) and “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 (NIV)
