It all started when I responded to a report of a jewel robbery by a costumed crook, but the description didn’t match any of my known adversaries. When I arrived, the crook turned, gun in hand, and smirked at me. I chuckled. “You do know I can outrun bullets, right?”
Her response, in a voice that was scarily familiar was, “Bullets? No, Speedster, I’m not going to shoot bullets at you. My slowness ray, however…”
“Slowness ray?” I retorted, “That's a new one. Bet you think you can slow me down.”
As I started to move towards her a blue beam came at me from her weapon. Suddenly I found myself moving at normal human speed. Tortoise moved around me while I was in shock, and ran towards the door laughing at me. "See you around ‘Speedster’!”
A couple of minutes later my powers returned, but Tortoise was gone. As an on-camera reporter, I have to keep my emotions in check, so it was tough reporting on Speedster’s failure to capture a crook in a turtle suit. Nor was it to be the last of such reports as Tortoise robbed several more establishments in the next week. I was sure I could outrun her trigger finger, but she managed to get the drop on me every time.
I decided on a different tactic when we met again. I wouldn’t use my speed to try to stop her. I’d try to use stealth. I got my chance eight days after our first encounter. She was robbing a society party being held on a yacht. As the party was being held in the open water, I couldn’t just walk there, and running on the water might make enough noise for Tortoise to hear my approach as I splashed while running. After borrowing the assistance of the Coast Guard to get out to the yacht, I leapt over the side and resumed superspeed, hitting the brakes just outside a stateroom, where I sauntered in as she was relieving the guests of their valuables. Tortoise was so busy with her victims that she didn’t notice me until a matronly woman shouted, “Speedster! Thank goodness you’re here to save us!”
Tortoise turned and aimed her ray gun at me. “Don’t you ever learn? This time I’ll slow you down to the point of stopping your heart.”
I just smiled and walked straight at her, surmising that she would aim where she thought I’d be if I moved at speed. I was right, and her shot missed me by several feet. I had also guessed who she was under her mask. My biggest worry was that she might have figured out my real identity, too. So I took the risk by taunting her, “Natasha, don’t you know crime doesn’t pay? Get fired from your job at Hermes Labs?”
Tortoise was stunned that I knew her name and place of employment. Still, she responded right out of the cliche handbook every villain seems to use, :You’ll never take me alive, Speedster!”
I grinned, walked right up to her, and gave her a solid right hook to the jaw. She went down and the guests dashed over to her loot bag to retrieve their valuables. I paid little attention to them as I disarmed the Tortoise and removed her mask to reveal my redheaded half sister,Natasha. As I was tying her up I asked under my breath, “What will mom think with having a superhero daughter and a supervillain one too?"
I taped a quick interview with myself telling myself, with some camera editing tricks, “Well, Belinda, once I figured out what her strategy was, it was just a matter of patience, which is a virtue, right?”
“So,” I asked myself, "This was an easy case to wrap up?”
Rushing to change clothes at superspeed was tiring me out, so I just nodded, while thinking it was harder to take down my sister than to do this interview. But as I mentioned, I had to keep my emotions in check...
