We ran outside in time to see a lady pushing an aluminum cart through the entrance to our campus. A crowd of eager children was gathering and one child yelled, “She has ice cream sandwiches!”
My husband and I looked at each other. My brain was flooded with visions of one of our favorite American treats—a thick slab of vanilla ice cream between two chocolate wafers. John eagerly made his way to the small cart and placed his order—one ice cream sandwich. If only I could share with you the disappointment that flooded his face when he was handed a scoop of ice cream resting within a common hamburger bun!
Some surprises turn out to be humorous. But the Bible proclaims an event that we do not want to be a surprise. Before He left earth Jesus promised that He would return. At His ascension into Heaven, angels declared, “...This same Jesus...will come back...” (Acts 1:11 NIV) In First Thessalonians, chapter 4, Paul reminds the Believers that the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a shout, and Believers will suddenly be caught up into the air to live forever with Christ. Then in chapter 5 he consoles them, “But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.” (1 Thessalonians 5:4 NIV)
When we accept Jesus as our Savior our desire should be to walk close to Him, expecting His return momentarily. Daily prayer and faithfully reading God’s Word will prevent Christ’s shout from being a surprise!
