“Hey, how’re ya doin’,” Doug greeted. “Wasn’t that a stirring message from the pastor yesterday?”
Brent grimaced and opened his insulated lunch tote. “He was certainly passionate, but it seems like a lot of hype to me. Like, how long has the world been waiting for the return of Christ? I remember being scared to death as a kid. I expected water to turn to blood any minute. Lots of talk but nothin’ happening. You know, the disciples were expecting him back in the first century, and here it is two thousand years later.”
“I hear ya’.” Doug washed the last of his sandwich down with a swallow of diet soda. “I had some questions about that, too, so I began to research some scriptures on my own.”
Brent sat up straighter and looked at Doug. “So...what are you finding?”
“There were countless prophesies concerning the birth of Jesus....you know, Isaiah, Micah, Daniel....all through the Old Testament. Although they occurred hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, they were fulfilled just as prophesied. The return of Jesus has been promised by angels, the apostles, Paul, and Jesus, himself.” Doug took another swallow of soda. “If the prophesies concerning Christ’s birth came true, shouldn’t we expect the prophesies about his return to come true?”
“Oh, I agree the prophesies are there. But I don’t see the urgency right now. It could be another couple thousand years. Pastor Kimble talked like it could happen momentarily.”
Brent bit into one of his chocolate chip cookies while Doug crumpled up his napkin and laid it on the table. “We don’t know the exact day, that is for sure, but Jesus told us that when we see certain things come to pass, we should start looking up. One biggie is the return of the Jewish people to their homeland. Other prophesies.....like the whole world having the gospel, and every eye being able to see events unfolding, these have only been possible in the last few years. Cell phones and the Internet have been a tremendous game changer.”
“Yeah, I hadn’t thought about that so much.” Brent shifted in his seat. “I guess I need to study this topic more, too. Maybe it’s not all talk and no action.”
“Right.” Doug got up and threw his trash in the waste basket. “Let’s talk again after you have looked up some of the scriptures that Pastor Kimble passed out.”
Brent nodded. “I’d like that.”
The Bible tells us that scoffers will come. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3:3-4). But, some day.....possibly some day soon, “the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
Whether Christ’s return is very soon, or a thousand years from now, the important thing is knowing you are ready to meet him. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

For a long, long time Noah warned that it was going to rain. When that first rain DID come, it was too late for the scoffers. May the Lord give all who read this 'ears that hear'. In Jesus name.
Great job with this. Thank you.
