“Yeah, I’m starving.”
“Good. Breakfast is almost ready.” Lizzy waddled a few steps over to the cook top. “How do you want your eggs, scrambled?”
Joanne stepped into the kitchen. “Uh-huh.”
“That’s how Eddie liked em too; always wanted his scrambled…not fried… not hard boiled… only scrambled. And after 50 years, he never would try omelets, either.” She shook her head and chuckled. “That man…well, I’m sure he’s enjoying his meals now. He always said the food in heaven would be better than anything in this world.”
Lizzy stirred the eggs in the fry pan and sprinkled them with salt and pepper.
“Eddie hated runny eggs, so I always made sure they were good and cooked.” She scraped the eggs onto a plate, and slowly carried it across the room to the table.
“Honey, could you get the rolls and bacon out of the oven? The oven mitt’s there on the counter.” She nodded her head toward the stove as she placed the plate on the table.
“Sure, Grandma.”
When they had sat down and were ready to start eating, Lizzy threw up her hands. “I almost forgot; we gotta pray.” She reached out and grasped Joann’s hand and they bowed their heads.
“Dear merciful Father, thank you so much for bringing Joanne here today and for the time we can spend together; and thank you for the food you provide; and thank you for our health and the ability to enjoy the life you’ve given us. Don’t ever let us forget how blessed we are, and please remind us always that you are there, listening to our every prayer. And thank you Father, for your dear Son Jesus, in whom I pray. Amen.”
Joanne picked up and bit into a piece of crisp bacon.
“Eddie always liked to be the one who said grace. He said I spread it out way too long, and all I really had to say was ‘Thank you Lord for this food,’ and let that be that. I never did agree with him. I think a good long prayer before digging into the fine food the Lord gives us is the right thing to do. But that’s one place where Eddie and I differed.”
“Eddie always said I had a tendency to be long winded. He said I would have made a good attorney, though. ‘Lizzy,’ he’d say, ‘you could talk the desire to win an argument out of just about anyone.’ He’d joke and say they’d eventually break down and beg to change their plea to guilty just so they wouldn’t have to listen to me jabber anymore.” Lizzy jiggled with laughter. “Aah, that Eddie, I knew he was just kidding, always having fun with me like he liked to do.” She heaved a long sigh and smiled with a distant look. “We had such a good time together.”
“When he teased me, I’d say, ‘You know Eddie, you’re right, I do talk a lot, and do you know why?’ Then I’d tell him, ‘I think the good Lord gave me a gift for gab for a reason, so I think I better use it.’ Then Eddie would quote the place in Proverbs where it talks about making our words few and taming our tongue, and then act all smug like he’d won some kind of an argument. Well, I wasn’t going to argue with God’s Word, but I sure had a hard time holding my tongue with Eddie.
“I did have to agree with him, though, about being careful of what comes out of our mouth. Every word we say carries more weight than we realize, and can really pack a punch, and cause a lot of problems if we're not careful.”
Lizzy gazed at Joanne. “How’s your breakfast?”
Joanne mumbled, her mouth full with her second cinnamon roll. “This is really good Grandma.”
“Good. I’m glad you like it.” She paused. “And I’m glad I have you here to talk to. I don’t get to talk much to anyone these days now that you’re Grandpa's gone. Now, I want to hear about you dear…how’s school?
