Personally, I prefer the instructional type of words, those that are found in a classroom or in a sermon, and yet I can get my fill of all speech soon enough.
The telephone is my least liked form of communication. That is unfortunate for me because I have two sisters who can talk on the phone for literally hours; it's easy enough to simply withhold your phone number from casual acquaintances, but not from sisters.
However, I would be so sad if they never called me, if I did not know what was happening in their day, if I had no chance to share my life with them.
Words spoken are important to concern ourselves about, and spoken words have power to create or to destroy.
In my ignorance of that spiritual fact I have too often spoken such unkind words and have placed upon my children and grandchildren some very unkind proclamations, forming in them negative thoughts about themselves; words such as, "Can't you ever do anything right?"
We are advised in the Scriptures that, "In a multitude of words, there is no want of sin."
The problem of words wrongly spoken often makes a person want to close their mouth and refuse to speak, which is neither practical or possible; but maybe it is advisable to think about, and to listen, to what we say.
If we could believe that God hears what we say, and takes it personally, when we degrade or encourage any one of His children, we might then listen to ourselves with acuity. Psalm 59: 7 - 8
If we are really serious about "word watching," there is a place of which we must all take close notice: the seat of all we verbalize comes from our hearts, so if we have a problem, if we are not the "perfect man" of which James speaks (James 3: 2) then our heart is the place for us to begin to clean it up. This is true because the Bible tells us that, "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Luke 6: 45
The Bible has a lot to say about our words. Following are a few of those quotes:
Prov. 4:23
Prov. 6: 2
Prov. 12: 13
Prov. 16: 23
Ephesians. 4: 29
I have presented myself as one who does not like to talk a lot, but the truth is that I love words. I love to preach, and to teach, and to write; those forms of communication are more comfortable because they are certain to be good speech, planned words. Psalm 119: 11
Patience has been a life-long pursuit for me, but I never pray to be patient. My mother taught me to never pray for patience, but to just do it.
Impatience is one of the generators of dirty speech, whether truly filthy or perhaps worse, injurious speech; speech that cuts like a knife and destroys by creating negative and accusing pictures in the minds of those who hear them.
Our spoken words are a mirror for each of us by which we may hear, and view our hearts condition.
