She regretted her shallow thoughts of the past, her thoughtless comments that she would be better off without her husband, that he was useless and never did anything around the place. Even thinking she would like to be independent and why did she have to run every little decision past him.
Now Pete was dead, had been for six months in fact, and she missed him terribly. Her thoughts now were of how much he had done and how hard it was having to do everything herself. He had been far from useless, and especially since his retirement four years ago, he had done many projects and maintenance jobs around the house for which she was very grateful.
Independence was no fun at all, she decided. How she wished Pete was still here to share decisions, to talk things over with, to enthuse with her over little things. But the sudden heart attack that took his life couldn’t be undone. Now she was alone, only phone and skype contact with far-off family to fill the gap.
Her loneliness threatened to overwhelm. Her lethargy engulfed her, motivation for daily living had fled.
Penny picked up the phone.
“Kay,” she said when her friend answered. “Can you come over? I need you.”
She unlocked the front door and waited till Kay got there. Over a cup of tea they talked. Kay didn’t let on she had been waiting for this day, that she had been watching Penny’s struggle with concern, and praying ceaselessly for her.
“I can’t do it,” Penny said now through her tears. Kay slipped the tissues across the table. “I hate being on my own, I hate that God took Pete so suddenly, we didn’t even have a chance to say goodbye. I hate having to deal with everything by myself.”
Kay let her talk. She could remember how it felt in the early days of her own single journey after her husband died. That was eight years ago now, and she also knew that there was hope, that Penny could learn to live again and even to be happy. But she had to give it time, it was early days yet. Kay was glad she would have the privilege of walking the journey with her.
Gently Kay led her through several scriptures and prayed with her friend. They made plans to spend regular time together to deal with some of the practical issues Penny was facing.
“I’m here for you whenever you need me,” Kay assured her. “But more importantly God is with you all the time. You have a steep climb ahead, but you can do it.”
They hugged as Kay prepared to leave.
“Now it’s up to you to trust him,” Kay said as she turned to the door. “He won’t let you down.”
